I got my 11" MBA Saturday at the Mall of America Apple Store. I asked them if they had any models other than the 4 standard. The guy said no. I had thought about upgrading it here and there, even though I felt I didn't need it. I only used 28 GB of hdd on my old MacBook. On my MBA, iStat has just barely gone over active/inactive ram. So, I'm quite sure the $999 model will serve me well.

The big thing for me is I really wish it had a newer processor. I thought about waiting until they could fit a Core iN and fancy graphics. Problem is that could be 2 years. I will stick with my $999 MBA and maybe upgrade in a year or 2 if they come out with something drastically better.

Which they of course will.... :)

Apple Store letting me pick one up instead of waiting for my not-yet-arrived one

I just got a call from our business rep at San Francisco Union Square store. He ordered a maxed out 13 for me last week and it's still making its way here from China, ETA Thursday or Friday.

To my surprise, he told me they just got the same model in the store and he offered to let me come pick that one up instead. I just have to drop off the BTO one when it arrives.

Not sure if you can do this without a business account, but figured I'd share . . .

This really tells us Apple should have just included 4 GB RAM. We all know that for long term usage, we're going to need 4 GB RAM. Apple knows this too. Lion will probably be 2 GB min, but 4 GB recommended RAM.

As much as we want 4 GB to be standard, Apple needed to come in at $999 price point to advertise/market it at under $1k. To do that, 2 GB was probably the amount that left the margins Apple needed.

Just too bad for all of us willing to spend the money that the BTO options aren't there for every feature. And also that they aren't selling the maxed out options in the stores too. Why not have eight models in stores with loaded ones having 2.13 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB SSDs and etc for other size for $1799.

In general, Apple stores just stock the most common configurations. This has always been true. I agree that, apart from the $999 version, I think Apple should have just made 4GB standard (or at least done so on the 13" versions more likely to be used as primary computers). But it is good that they will be offering 4GB configurations in the stores instead of just using the stores as glorified websites for BTO configurations.

I wish Apple offered maxed out Airs in stores and online as standard models, I can get a € 200 rebate o any Mac, but no BTO options are allowed.

SF flagship store just got some maxed out 13" that they are calling "The Ultimate" internally.

They had no 11" with 4GB RAM config though.

Funny thing is i would probably received a BTO 11.6 by now, if i'd ordered on release date, instead of playing the waiting game

nothing beats the feeling of buying one in store, after trying a floor model, in my opinion, but i might have to do it online in the end!

SF Flagship Store had some arrive today. I called yesterday, Sunday and they had no maxed out versions of either the 11" or the 13". But today...

I think I got the last one, maxed out 11" at the store SF flagship. I called about about 3:00pm and spoke with someone who said they had a few 1.6, 4gb, 128gb 11" MBA that came in today.

I got there at about 3:30 and walked right up to a salesperson who said he thought there was 1 left. I told him, "I want it." A few minutes later he returned with it. Some may not believe me, so I'll try to scan my receipt. Haven't even unboxed it yet.

My local Apple store had maxed out 13" and 11" today as well.

Quite the shame Apple didn't do this at launch, as it would have made my wait quite a bit less!

But still, the waiting is well worth it for 4GB IMO, it sucks during, but I figure over the life of the laptop, it will pay off greatly

I don't mean to big a jerk, but when you "confirm" something, it seems like you should post a source. Nothing against you, but the internet has a lot of joker/people fooling around/others who are just plain mistaken.

It makes sense for Apple to stock them from my point of view, but Apple doesn't always play by everyone's playbook

Confirmed = go to your local apple store, talk to an expert or a manager, and get your answer. It's a physical retail store, won't find info online, unless some of the blog sites do the same.

I wish I didn't ordered the BTO which is still stuck in Anchorage. I could have picked up a maxed-out today from NYC

The Apple store in Bridgeport Village near Portland Oregon got some 4GB models today. I took my 13" 256GB in because it was showing an error code from the Apple hardware test. The offered to exchange so I asked if they had any 4GB models. They had the 13" 2.13GHz, 4GB, 256GB SSD model so they let me exchange for the difference. Installing now, benchmarks later tonight.

Thank you! I saw this note, and rushed to the store and got a 13/256/4/2.13. They said they got them today. I was just about to order this online, so it saved me a week!

You guys think they'll stock the base 13 with 4GB?

No, my understanding is that they will have 6 configurations total. The 4 standard along with an "ultimate" (top config with upgraded memory and processor) for 11" and 13". This matches what they have done with the MBP in the past at times.

2005 called and they want their ram back.....

The fact that any of these are offered in less than 4gb ram is horrible. It's just going hurt Apple's reputation in the long run, among both tech geeks and new apple consumers switching. You can't upgrade later sol if you go cheap? $999. You're stuck!

Sometimes uncle steve is a genius and sometimes he needs an iPad beat down

Sure they will sell but many won't be happy bat the upsell

Called Valley Fair store on Monday night to check after I read this... Yup, they had some "ultimate" configs in stock!

I got the 11.6", 4gb ram, 128gb drive version. :D

Called my closest :apple: store yesterday. A gal told me they had an 11" in stock with 4GB of RAM. 2 hours of a drive later showed me just how misinformed or conniving - or both - these "geniuses" really are. As I figured there was no such machine and according to the store GM they never had such a machine saying "those currently are only available as BTO online". Thankfully there is a Cheesecake Factory at this mall so the trip was not a total loss. ;) Not to mention I really did (do) want a decked out 13" which will most likely go on order in the next week if in fact they don't start popping up at any stores near me.

I just wish my local stores have this too... Unfortunately they only have the 4 basic configurations...:(
