Over over the past few months I’ve been spending a lot of my “computer time” on my 2017 iMac. On one hand the large display is great for visual tasks like photo and video editing, but there’s also something about it that can strain my eyes with prolonged use. The retina iPad display, on the other hand, has always been a joy to use. This afternoon I was sitting at my desk for 30-45 minutes writing a few paragraphs in Pages on the iPad Pro and was struck by how much more comfortable this task was on a small iPad vs my 5K iMac. Don’t get me wrong, I love the iMac (and my MacBook Pro display was awesome too), but the iPad Pro displays are some the best Apple has made thus far.

I have a bit of an issue going from display to display. My MacBook and iOS devices are retina, but my TV and monitors at work are not. I have found that it's not necessarily one display resolution over the other, but the constant difference in resolutions that make my eyes hurt.

I do love the iPads though - they are always a pleasure to use. I wonder if it's some of the color temperature adjustments that make the difference...

Yeah I could see how frequently switching between different resolutions could be bothersome.

Both the iMac and iPad are retina displays, but the iPad definitely beats the iMac when it comes to readability. Text is much more crisp and easy on the eyes. I still love the iMac, but I could probably work at a desk with my 10.5 iPad and a keyboard, doing tasks like typing and reading for long periods of time more comfortably. Even my previous 2015 MacBook Pro, which the iMac replaced, was better than the iMac in this regard.
