Here's how I see it should be :

1. All Events on iPhoto should have option to backup in similar order to iCloud
2. All photos from Camera Roll should have option to upload them in any 'Event' which would cascade down to all your devices (No need to sync to iPhoto for this)
3. 'Shared Photostream+My Photostream' should all be just 'Photostreams' and all your standard albums can have option of sharing or just to yourself

This will bring it much closer to Picasa/G+ photo sharing concept but all for iOS Ecosystem.

Apple just does the "it works good enough, no need to develop further" method. Hence why services like Dropbox+Carousel, Picturelife or Google+ Photos continue to give Apple a spanking in this area.

It doesn't help that Apple waits a year to update their core apps and services. They should start updating apps separately like Google does. That way we don't have to wait a whole year for maps to be upgraded.

Like others said, iCloud isn't meant for this and I just don't get how people what free photo storage from Apple. They offer more iCloud storage

The other systems are free for a reason and I just use skydrive as a way for photos to transfer to my computer. I don't use Photostream because you can only have 1 iTunes attached to it. This way my wife and I share my Skydrive and just move the pictures automatically, then move them to the computer every so often, and then that computer is backed up to Crashplan.

I don't get these people who have 1000's of pics on their phone and the phone breaks they whine and cry how they lost all their pictures.

This. It's bizarre why they wait a year to add features. Or to change how stuff works when the competition comes up with something better.

Google+ photos was updated today. Again. More features. Google makes so you just aren't uploading. Photos for them to sit. They make your photos much more active. The best part is there's nothing to download. It just works.
