The linked article was fun to read. I hope we see more about this process in the future. Someone who watches How It's Made and shows like it would recognize many of these techniques, but it is more fun to see how they are used here.

BTW - what is channel bonding when talking about Thunderbolt 2?

Channel bonding is the use of two data channels in combination to transport 1 data stream at the aggregate throughput of both channels.

Thunderbolt 1 has two independent channels at 10Gbps.
Thunderbolt 2 adds the capability to bond those to get 20Gbps for 1 stream of data.

Yes, it's possible to get 20Gbps total on Thunderbolt 1. The problem is that it's only when you have two separate data streams.
