Hi all,
I have recently terminated my Sky TV subscription based on the fact that I am currently living between two households. One of the households I spend time with already has their own Sky subscription so I can occasionally catch up on things there. I'm now looking for a solution for my other residence that will tide me over until I am able to purchase my own place in early to mid 2014. I want to explore alternatives to expensive subscription services so that when I do have my own place I don't have to commit to a contract for my entertainment.
Basically, my Sky TV package was costing me £65 a month and all I really watched was; Sport (English and Spanish Football, Golf, Tennis, Cycling, NFL... I'll watch any sport to be fair); discovery channel (Fast and Loud, American Chopper, Wheeler Dealers, anything to do with astronomy, David Attenborough); extreme channel (skateboarding, surfing, bmx, Fantasy Factory); and the occasional series such as Dexter, Elementary, Breaking Bad. My partner and I rarely watch Live TV as we can't stand the 5 minute ad breaks, we would always record the show and watch it another day or later that evening. I paid for the movies subscription in the hopes of finding something decent however we rarely did and I usually inflated my bill each month with some box office movies or DVD rentals.
Things I like:
- ability to record / download a series for viewing later
- sport sport sport
- science programmes
- on demand type options
Hardware I have:
- Sky Dish
- multiple TV's
- windows laptop (i7, 16gb ram, 256 ssd, 3gb graphics)
- late 2013 rMBP
- iPad 3
- iPhone 5
- 2009 White MacBook (dual core, 4gb ram)
- PS3, PS4 on pre-order
- 40gb/second internet connection (unlimited downloads)
I would love to be able to watch all my content on as many of my devices as possible, Sky was very frustrating in that respect with no discovery channel on Sky player and a limited number of connected devices.
I would be willing to spend a similar amount per month for a better setup (<£50 would be nice)
I would be willing to invest in PVR's, wireless storage, Apple TV or alternatives.
I'm envisaging a setup with some monthly rolling subscriptions (lovefilm / Netflix) coupled with some monthly purchases (iTunes, Blinkbox, PS3 movie rentals) but am unsure how to satisfy my thirst for sport.
The setup must be legal so no xbmc
If you made it this far, thank you, any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
