It's a pity there isn't a 5.5" XR and a 6.1" XR Max, in which case I'd probably get 5.5" XR which would be the equivalent of the current XR but in an iPhone 6/7/8 body. They could have priced the 5.5" XR the same as the current XR while XR Max would cost $100 more.

Maybe I change my mind when I see the XR but anything larger than XS is a surfboard to me, never mind the specs.

I didn't know that either supported zoomed view. Does that mean you get the same screen as an XS, just bigger? (Bigger icons, bigger fonts etc.)
Yes.
In standard mode, everything is the same size, so you get more on screen.
In zoomed mode, you get the same amount of info on screen, but it's larger to take advantage of the screen size.

Is it just me or have phones, tablets, and computers are just plain boring nowadays. I just don't care to get the latest stuff anymore. Seems like every year there is less of a reason to upgrade. Same goes for my friends. I take it the market is fully saturated and this whole tech bubble is ready to pop.

I think some of this are design choices from Apple:

  • You want a smaller device? Tough nuggies - 5.8" screen and up
  • You want no notch? Nothing to see here - not even a software option to cover it up.
  • Let's take away features (headphone jack, 3D Touch) yet raise the average selling price.

These are very good phones with some impressive features, but you either like what they're doing and can get excited about them, or you don't and keep what you have.

And since that chip isn't driving an OLED display, the XR gets way more battery life.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe OLED uses less juice than LCD, if for no other reason than it doesn't need back lighting and blacks are pixels that are literally turned off.

And in this case, it's that the LCD is "720p-ish" vs the "Quad HD-ish" screen of the XS/Max that negate the power savings, since there are more pixels being driven.

Now they just need to make a sub-XS-sized version of this phone for even cheaper, to serve as the new SE.
This in spades.

My SE is the bee's knees.
Love the form-factor: One-hand use for the win!

And, btw, it has the same pixel density of the "new flagship" XR -- 326ppi

And, what about its battery?
My coconuBattery app running on my MBP says:
  1. Manufacture Date: 2016/04/11 (Ancient on the iPhone calendar)
But, but ...
  1. Current Charge: 1585 mAH 99.9% (Full Charge Capacity: 1586mAH)
  2. Design Capacity: 1624 mAH 97.7% (Cycle Count: 140)
So after more than two years my SE goes on ticking.

Could you do a comparison of LTE speeds: XR vs. XS? I can't seem to find this anywhere.... I know it's not systematic, but any info could be useful.

I would think the speeds would be the same. Didn’t they use the same LTE chips in both devices?

Update: I just realized they did not... That would be interesting to find out... I don’t think there is anywhere that could support the XS gigabit LTE chip. Anyone know of a place that has LTE at this speed?

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but none of the new phones will be 5G compatible - right? Most companies are already launching in the next few weeks (albeit in select markets) but would it make more sense to hold off until 2019? My old but reliable 6S still does the trick and even with the "lower" XR price, seems like I'd be better off waiting until next year's 5G phones. Or not? Thoughts?

Go find somebody with an XS and tell me if they get anywhere near a 1GB speeds. I will bet you my paycheck for the month, that on LTE they won't, it won't even be close. The average across all of the carriers in the U.S. is around 30-35mbps. Even living in a large city, like San Fran or NYC and I bet you won't come close to it. Is is capable? Yes. Will yous see it? Nope. That's like looking for a car that can go 180mph, but you don't live in Germany, and instead live in L.A. and travel the HWY 1 every day where you average like 20mph if you're lucky with the traffic. I'll worry about 5G when I get LTE advanced speeds, and even that doesn't remotely happen yet. You're probably looking at 2 years for an Apple 5G phone anyway. My guess is it will be an Apple engineered chip at that point, since Intel isn't innovating much anymore, and Apple can engineer some fantastic chips.

Hopefully that's updated via software since the pixel can do it on pets, etc. That's the only downside I see in this phone for me personally.

Yeah, that's the only downside for me, too. I have zero portrait mode photos of people; I have an infinite amount of my dogs. I never used 3D touch. I'll wait to see one in person, but I'm leaning toward trading in my X for the XR once my 12 month upgrade kicks in after xmas.

I feel the same. I was an early adopter of smartphones, including at least a couple before I got my first Handspring Treo. The jump to the first iPhone was a pretty big advancement in technology and usability. Ever year of iPhone upgrades has felt less and less exciting. Early on, I upgraded every year. Then, every other year. This year I bought the XS but the last new iPhone I got was a 6s. Then, I actually *downgraded* to an SE (because my daughter dropped her iPhone and cracked the screen, so I gave her my 6s, but also because I missed the smaller size of the SE).

If not for the significantly better camera, me wanting a little larger screen (than the SE) for looking at my photos, and just being bored wanting to finally upgrade to something newer, I would have probably been happy enough living with my SE.

But it would be great to see a game-changing come-out-of-nowhere company come into the market and offer a brand new smartphone with a brand new OS/UI. That would be fun.

I think the biggest problem is how much of the market Apple now controls... I mean think about the features such as iMessage or the iCloud platform in general... All my contacts... in Apple. All my photos.... Apple. The biggest one would be iMessage for me though. I rely so heavily on iMesseage, as do many others. I would try a new phone in a heartbeat if iMesseage was available on that device. The way it syncs to my computer and iPad so seamlessly makes it game changing. I have not seen any other alternatives out there to this that work in the manner iMessage does.

I was
With MOST of the smartphone market going with at least 5” screens on “small models” and some up to over 6.5” on bigger ones. I doubt any SE comebacks. But it’s Apple so you never know.

1984 was a good year!!

I guess what you could do is try portrait with a person holding the cats??? Idk... just a thought. You can get similar bokeh look by focusing real close on the subject too. Maybe 3rd party apps??

I was thinking "I bet you can get a 3rd party app that does it". Google does it with one lens so apple should be able to as well.

I would just stick with the X. The camera isn't going to be much better on the Xr (and only then in certain situations) and the X can do portrait pics of everything you want. Sure the A12 is faster than the A11, but the A11 is faster than just about any chip on the market still. Unless you want a little more size or sweet color. I'll probably be getting the red Xr. My wife has the Xs Max and it's beautiful and huge, and great, but not worth the $450 difference for the 128gb Xr/256gb Xs Max.

Do you happen to know where GB LTE is even offered? The carrier maps don't seem to point it out.

Doesn't need to be cheaper, just same specs and smaller size for the huge amount of potential customers who don't want a phablet. People who want to upgrade but are still using their SE's because even the "standard size" X has gotten pretty huge.
How small would you want an SE2 (I don't think Tim Cook woudl approve of the SE X) to be? 5" 5.5"? Honestly I think a screen the size of the original Pixel which I have in my hand right now, which stands at 5" wouldn't be bad at all.

Wonder what last year’s iPhone X is worth now that the new models are here? Thinking of getting one with a new battery.

I can't find much either. Just numbers of markets that supposedly have it, which isn't helpful. I saw where Verizon could get up to 1.2 gbps in a test in NYC. That was with a specific handset that they probably somehow prioritized however. It's only in the largest cities for sure, and even then you won't see it.

I'd love to see evidence of that. This gets blurted out everywhere, but I haven't actually seen any evidence.

People will buy what's available, it's just that no smaller form factor is available. The closest comparison we have is the 6/7/8 plus and non-plus, and the X/Xs and Xs Max in terms of phones that are very similar but differ in size. For all of those I would bet that the smaller of the two sold more.

As to why Apple is going big? I think it must be because 1) it's way easier to design/build a larger phone... there is just more space to fit things in., 2) people are still buying the phones, 3) there is no competition that makes smaller phones
The evidence is what Apple built. This Xr, XS, and XS Max.

If people buy them, Apple was right.

Apple has built small phones before. They can do it. Most people want bigger phones, the end.

Part of the issue is that the annual improvements you’re seeing are incremental and not earth shattering and part of it is likely that your expectations have been set too high.

Instead of thinking about why the newest iPhone or Android devices look similar year after year, try thinking about what ground breaking change you think should be developed.

I think what you’ll find is that the things you think should be possible just are not yet feasible. And some things like device shape is part of function, so doing something like a round iPhone will just never make sense, unless we change everything about how we interact with devices.

The market has become saturated for friends. I think we hit peak friend a few years ago.

There's still an emerging market in wearable friends.
Yeah, this really disappoints me. I’ve got a blue XR arriving Friday and it was only subsequent to preordering that I started hearing about the limitations of portrait mode on the XR. I take an inordinate amount of photos of our cats and had been enjoying the prospect of using portrait mode for this (I’m coming from an iPhone 6). It’s a shame not to have it for anything other than humans. Who takes photos of humans, anyway? So boring, so deficient in fur and whiskers...so inferior... Oh, sorry, that was the toxoplasma gondii talking again.

Anyway, the lack of that feature is not enough to justify the added expense of the XS for me. I want more storage than 64GB, which would put a XS well over £1,000. I simply can’t justify that cost on a phone. It’s not quite as essential to productivity as a dedicated computer. Maybe one day...

Since you're coming from a 6, consider returning your Xr for an 8 Plus. The Xr is better in most ways, but it sounds like the dual camera setup is important to you, and the 8 Plus is still a great phone. (On a side note, how did you not notice the absence of a second camera on the Xr? I mean, it *obviously* doesn't have a second camera to support depth perception. Not trying to harangue you, I just don't understand.)

Better AI will be the neat upgrade path. Since Siri does its stuff on the phone, the better AI is going to take a lot of processing power. The camera keeps getting better as well. I see some major improvements going from the X to the XS. But physics and biology should eventually end that as a legitimate upgrade feature. Don't know when, but it has to happen eventually. There just isn't enough distance in the phone for the lens to get much better. And our eyes can only pick up so much detail and so much color clarity. So biology puts a limit on how good pictures can get.

But AI currently stinks in our phones compared to what will be available very soon.

Totally agree that desktop computers have slowed down in their upgrade path. Once you have a very good screen and a very fast CPU/GPU there ain't much you can do. My 2011 iMac was good enough before it died. I suspect my next Mac (which I'm buying when stuff gets released in November) will last five years minimum and maybe last, really, until it breaks like my 2011 iMac. And I might get that level of future proof out of lower end spec'ed version of the desktops they release (be it iMac or Mini).

I get that they'll enhance the phones capabilities but I'm thinking purely from a physical design perspective. I wouldn't imagine the manufacturers will settle for all building identical black rectangles.
