You guys don’t have that Galaxy S23 Ultra laying around anymore? All I want to see is that same building from the last couple articles. Do the zoom to the top of the building comparison. On the 14, it was absolutely shameful. On the S23 you could see very clearly what was up there. The iPhone just gave a vague impression. I would like to see how that compares to the new phones.

Good point. But they did it here twice before. Was hoping they’d keep it up. This audience especially needs to see it. I don’t know why Apple is putting so much focus (no pun intended) on the zoom lens when Samsung has been putting them to shame on it for years now.

They’ve just done the standard thing they’ve done many many times before. When they don’t have it, they say it’s hard to use or the picture quality is not great or other excuses. Then when they get it, they’ll say it’s the most amazing thing anyone has ever done.

yes i know but they seem to make it as best as they could for a 5x tele lens except for 12mp on that. the 10X digital can go almost head to head with Samsung 10X optical... which says they worked on it quite a bit.

Which is exactly what I was hoping they would show us. But YouTube is indeed a good idea I always forget about.

OK so about ten minutes of YT told me exactly what I needed, indeed.

If you want 5x or video, iPhone is better. If zoom really is your main goal, the iPhone 15 is passable but clearly inferior. At 10x and 25x, the quality is still noticeably better, to the point that you can see things at 25x on the Samsung that you just can’t on the iPhone. The detail on the people inside the bubble is better. I will say it is closer than I expected.

yea that's what i meant.. i think it's the best of both worlds in terms of decent tele and image quality..
except of course for the 12mp on the x5.. i guess for 24mp it's still has noise/light limits

My view is there are people who "take" photographs. And that's great.

And there a people who "make" photographs. Which is much much different.

In either case, it makes little difference what camera is used; say, ranging from an Arca-Swiss 4x5, to a mirrorless/dSLR, to a phone camera.

I concur. It always depends on the photographer, regardless of the equipment. Check out what Sebastiaan de With captured in his review of the 15 Pro Max camera:

Most of those shots are *gorgeous*!

But different tools have different capabilities, and the differences are growing. I was surprised to realize how large they already are.

Apple has always been competing against themselves.

It may be a new concept for you, hidden android fan!

incredible photos.. that's a serious craftsman

Great review & good pics of my hometown NYC 👍🏼 I think the new 5x tele is gonna be a lot of fun. The always on portrait mode is cool. And the extra “lenses” 28, 35 & 48 are nice even tho they aren’t real lenses only crops. But I do hope that Apple actually adds a 4th lens for the iPhone 16 Pros tho. Something between the 24mm main lens & the 120mm tele. Either a real 35, 50 or 70mm lens.

Strong/compelling photographs are made by the photographer, with his/her eye, imagination, life experiences, ability to assess the quality of light, assess what should or shouldn't be in the frame, recognize the importance of gesture when photographing people, and a dozen other considerations made in a few seconds before releasing the shutter.

Bringing photography to the masses is a good thing. Beyond that, people can choose how seriously they want to pursue their craft.

Once I was out in the woods photographing the sky, and all of a sudden a giant UFO flew into the frame, and this hatch pops open and these Aliens hang out of it and wave at me! I would have gotten a picture of it but I had to stop and think about 37 things while trying to “make” a photograph, and by the time I pressed the shutter the UFO had flown away.

Smart HDR - iPhone XS/XS Max
Smart HDR 2 - iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max
Smart HDR 3 - iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max
Smart HDR 4 - iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max
Smart HDR 5 - iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max

I don't understand why Apple kept Smart HDR 4 even though they introduced a 48MP sensor in iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max

iPhone 15/15 Plus uses A16 Bionic yet Apple switched to Smart HDR 5
And yet same chip as 14 pro, but they added more software improvements to 15… it doesnt make sense, but its just marketing, they slowly force you to upgrade

View that as a lesson to help make those decisions much quicker. :)

At some point, after making a few thousand photos with good results, it'll feel like you're on auto-pilot, not even being conscious of the decisions you reflexively make before releasing the shutter and making a great photograph.

Could someone please post a side-by-side comparison of 15 Pro Max 5x optical zoom vs 15 Pro digital 5x zoom?

I would count Sebastiaan de With’s photos in the review above as “real photography”, myself. But saying “real photography” unironically is always meant to draw a line between Us and Them - the kind of thing Real Photographers once used to mock people who shot with rolls of 35mm film.

And it will doubtless have just as much effect.

“The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on”.
