So - with news that the event won't even be live streamed, is this tempering any of our enthusiasm that the SE2 might come or anything along those lines?

The one thing I could still see is a simple internal spec bump in the existing case design, which wouldn't merit any special event or anything of the like..

..but I'm honestly not super optimistic that anything is coming this week.

Anyone else?

Seems likely it will be just the lower cost iPad with pencil support

And air power officially available

It’s an educational event, so I don’t see how an updated SE fits the bill.

The time of year was the main reason to suspect something.

Plus, Apple definitely has a history of sliding in "oh - and so and so lower priority product is also getting some slight updates today" type of things in the past.

The event itself almost certainly will be launching an education platform with a new iPad SKU geared specifically towards that... they might take the opportunity to do some tinkering (announced via separate press release) while the store is down however?

There doesn’t seem to be any reason to expect an new SE at this event other than the fact that around the anniversary of the original one. There haven’t been any leaks, only speculation. And it doesn’t seem to fit with an education themed event.

To my knowledge, there were never leaks about the SE either originally or with last years spec bump, were there?
(happy to wrong - I just don't remember there being any)

You’re right, so I wouldn’t say that a new SE next week is impossible but there just isn’t much reason to expect one.

"If there is a new iPhone SE 2 on the horizon, major design changes and the adoption of features from flagship phones are unlikely given the iPhone SE's position as a low-cost device."

As another member indicated, there is zero reason to introduce an SE during an educational event. This Event won’t even be live-streamed, which is even further evidence that this is not a hardware focused event that is primarily based on educational services. If there is any hardware at all, it’s likely a lower budget iPad and or an Apple Pencil at most. Introducing an iPhone during an educational Keynote would not be appropriate either.

Aside from that, I side with Ming Kuo that an SE 2 is not a factor in 2018.

Agree with other posters. There's been no chatter about it being released anyone time soon. Maybe WWDC. But it would seem to be a little bit of a random product to slot in there. Mind you, Apple does do that.

I wonder if we're now not going to see it until the September event?

Apple can then display loads of phones at different price points and sizes i.e.:

  • New iPhone X OLED screen aka the premium iPhone (iPhone 'Edition'?)
  • iPhone 9 and 9 plus (maybe just now 'iPhone'?) with the X interface and LCD screens aka the models that the vast majority will be expected to buy
  • And iPhone SE2 (presumably they're going to come up with a better name than SE2! iPhone Compact? I dunno)

Like I said in another thread or two, I think the chances of seeing an updated SE at the education event are basically zero. I do think the AirPower/AirPods wireless case will be released on Tuesday after the event, but silently or via a press release. I doubt they will even get brought up at the event itself. Those are accessories though, so a quiet simultaneous release is understandable, but something like a new phone - even a low cost one - is a bread and butter product that I think will get an event, so I'd say June at WWDC, or not at all if not then.

I agree the silent updated items will be the Airpower and Airpod Battery Case. If an iPad does launch during the Keynote, the Apple Store Will be taken down anyways to update then other items. The only other option would be Apple release the Airpower during WWDC, but given how unpredictable they are, who knows what they will do.

I suppose we will know as soon as the store does/ doesn't go down whether there will be generally available products released (I assume via a separate press release once they've wrapped up on stage?).

No new SE. :(

Not a shocker at all. It was an educational keynote. There is still hope for the SE perhaps in the future, but I don’t believe it will be in 2018, especially given with three new iPhones heavily rumored to launch this fall.

Given that the SE is meant to be super popular in India, I wonder if we’ll see a one off product launch for the SE2 in that country?

Especially as it’s rumoured to be solely manufactured there, too.

^ I don’t see a benefit to that. If they make one, they might as well sell it everywhere. Allows cheap access to iOS for someone that might otherwise go android.

Today’s event confirms Digitimes and Taiwan's Economic Daily News are highly inaccurate news sources. Both of them predicted a $259 iPad which didn’t happen. Both of them are predicting an SE2 this year. Kuo says no SE2 this year. I know who I’m trusting.
