Hello. I am still trying to decide between the latest iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G. I went to a store yesterday to try out the iPhone 3GS. Here is a list of questions:

    1. The internet connection was very slow. It took a long time (3-5 minutes) to load a simple webpage. The sales told me that it was because of slow internet connection in the store. It had nothing to do with the iPhone. Is this really true?

    2. I downloaded and opened a pdf file. It was difficult to read the contents. Using two fingers, I could zoom-in the document. However, as soon as my figures left the touch screen, the document returned to normal view. The sales said that there was no way to keep the document zoomed-in. He added that it depends on the pdf file. Is this really true? It sounds strange that one has to keep the fingers on the touch screen in order to view the documents in enlarged format.

    3. The sales suggested me to get an iPhone rather than an iPod Touch with pay wifi service. He mentioned that with the iPhone, I can get internet connection everywhere (in Hong Kong). However, even with pay wifi service, some places such as trains and buses are not covered. Is this in general true everywhere in the world? When I asked him how much he pays monthly for his iPhone, he just laughed without mentioning the amount.

    4. Supposing that there is a wifi connection, is there a speed different in internet access (web browsing for example) when the iPhone is connected through a phone service plan vs. through wifi connection?

    Thanks.

    1. The 3GS is far from slow. That is unless you're in an area where you're only getting EDGE coverage. Even then it should never take more than 2 minutes (that's pushing it) to load a web page. Mine averages 3 - 10 seconds depending on how busy the page is.

    2. I've never experienced any page that I was unable to obtain and retain a zoom. I don't look at many office documents though so your experiences may vary.

    3. I've never been to Hong Kong but here in Virginia when I had a data plan I had internet access everywhere I had a signal. I know in the major metro systems coverage can get spotty because of the whole "being underground" thing, but again this is just what I've heard. I'm not a metro user.

    4. Depending on the strength of your network connection, cellular data transfer rates can be from very close to leagues slower than Wifi. But on a normal day wifi is going to be noticably faster.

    1) Yes it is true

    2) BS, i currently have pdf files and i can keep the document in zoomed in state, no problem. So not sure what is happening to you.

    3) it depends on your needs. If your area lack wifi zones, then an iphone will be more useful as you can use the 3G network to access the net.

    4) Yes, from personal experience, wifi have been much faster than the 3G most of the time (except in in one country i visited 3G was as fast) however this depends on how fast is your carrier 3G network vs the wifi network you are using.

    hope this helps

I sold my 3G for the 3GS and have delivered opening day. At first, I thought it was a waste of money. I could not tell a diff. Now I mess around with my wife's 3G and holy hell it's slow. The 3GS is far snappier.

The iPod Touch does not have a cellular connection, hence is does not have 3G.
    It only has WiFi.

Sounds like you'll be looking at the new iPod Touch announced last week.

Thanks. To cut monthly cost, how about using wifi by default and use only 3G connection when wifi is not available? Is this possible?

Store just had bad signal and in my experience PDFs work fine.

If you feel you need a new phone, get the 3GS, if you're happy with your current one get the touch. That's all there is to it really.

I think they were referring to the 3rd generation iPod touch, as '3G' is also used to refer to a generation as well as a 3G network (like, for example, iPod nano 5G refers to the fifth gen iPod nano). :p
