Finally decided to retire my mid-2010 17” MacBook Pro i7 for the new 16” MacBook Pro i9. I do have a dirty little secret to share though…

About 4 months ago I purchased an Asus gaming laptop after getting tired of waiting for the 16” to be released. While it is blazing fast and can handle everything I throw at it, it does not run Mac OS. I realized pretty quickly I was not going to be happy living in the Windows world when it comes to personal computing. I deal with Windows all day every day at work and was really missing the Mac experience at home. When Apple finally announced the 16”, I tried my hardest to resist the temptation but ultimately I caved and bought one. So far though, not a single regret. This machine has reassured me why Apple is the best. The fit and finish are second-to-none. I felt the same way about my 17” and got almost 10 years out of it. Needless to say, I have very high expectations with my new 16”. Below are a few notes I have written down as I continue to use it -

Pros:

Lightning fast. Using it primarily for web browsing, email, music (Traktor DJ, Maschine Studio), photos (Lightroom,Photoshop), and video (Premiere Pro)

Keyboard feels great - have never used the butterfly keyboard on the previous MacBooks though so I’m not sure how much of an improvement it really is.

Trackpad size is insane! Still getting used to the single/double click action.

Screen looks amazing.

Speakers are spectacular - can actually hear the bass.

Love the Touch ID.

Feels way smaller than my 17” even though all the reviews are touting the 16” as ginormous. Guess none of them ever lived with a 17” for nearly a decade lol.

Cons:

Wanted an anti-glare screen but glossy is the only option currently

Wish it had a sleep light

Touch Bar seems kind of gimmicky - miss the physical buttons for brightness and volume.

The spec of your 16" ?
I am tempted too just like I am tempted to get the Porche also. sigh.
The 16" base model here in the EU starts at 2800 Euros!!
I have an 2018 MBA base model and cant fault it.
No doubt you are going to enjoy your 16"

Man, I just also switched from my old 2011 17" to the new 16" (was waiting for long-long time resisting buying the 15"). Would agree with 95% of your impressions (not only the sleep light, but also the battery level button/indicator would also be great ;)). Still observing for any issues to appear but so far so good. Yesterday even managed to run Star Citizen on it.. :) I guess I won't need a separate desktop for now.

I went with the base i9 (2.3ghz, 16gb RAM, 5500 4gb)

I also have a 17" MacBook Pro (from 2009) and the screen on the new MBP does seem noticeably smaller, but then again the computer as a whole is also way smaller and lighter. It's funny to hear people talk about how big the 16" is as a computer ("it's an aircraft carrier!") but it's nothing compared to some of the laptops Apple has made in the past. Heck, even the original clamshell iBooks seem way larger. But I guess I can see what they are saying if you're comparing it to something like a MacBook or MacBook Air.

To be honest I did not notice that much. On the contrary, since I have setup the smallest possible scale for the UI, I have got even more working space, compared to the 1920x1200 17". Which was kind of surprise, as I expected the smallest UI scale would be equivalent to the 17".

I maybe should have kept my 15" for comparison, but decided after a few days not as impressed with speakers as most making out to be. Stereo separation has been amped up, but everything still sounding pretty muddy and flat imo.

Just out of curiosity, OP, you say you run Traktor? I didn’t know a Catalina version was out. Are you running the beta (or Windows maybe)? And how is it? I’m kinda bitter that my Kontrol S4 Mk1 is no longer supported :(

I was forced to upgrade from Traktor Pro 2 to Traktor Pro 3 which was $25. I have a Traktor Kontrol S2 MK2 that I bought back in 2013. Sorry to hear your S4 is not working with Catalina 😔
