I (and many others) think that happened because they touched the battery with metal. If it had a user removable battery then that WOULDNT HAVE HAPPENED! YOU LISTENING APPLE???? 😀

The hardware hack still seems very complicated scraping away a trace without breaking it, then soldering a wire to it.
