I'm sure this is a very basic question, but having just made the Mac switch a week ago...I am lost. when I did a forum search, I found out how to access keychains, but I'm not sure if I found something particular to my question- please forgive me if I overlooked something.

I was downloading microsoft software last night and all of a sudden I began getting these little pop-ups that say "A keychain cannot be found for safari" with the option to cancel or reset to default.

how can I fix this so it doesn't happen?

Go into Keychain Access Preferences and try resetting your keychain.

I've hit reset on the popup a few times- no avail.

I just went into keychains access and did what you suggested- fingers crossed it works! thanks for replying!

EDIT:

still telling me a keychain cannot be found to store Safari. ugh. :( Any other ideas?

Ok, if reset my keychain doesn't work, then try First Aid.

Keychain Access>Keychain First Aid

From there enter in your password (if you have one set), click on repair and then Start.

^tried it! thanks! I am Still getting:

"a keychain cannot be found for safari" or on sites such as my credit card payments "a keychain cannot be found to store xxxx"

should I call apple?

Try this...

userfolder/Library/Preferences/

and move the file com.apple.keychainaccess.plist to your desktop and restart.

Then go back to Keychain Access and reset it in preferences. Post back.

I was getting a similar error, but in place of "Safari" it had a string of about eight or nine numbers. This happened on a fresh installation of macOS Big Sur after I signed in with my university domain account. I deleted the account and re-created it, but I still had the same problem. Your fix resolved it. I'm not sure what the cause was, but I appreciate your solution.
