Would this concern you?

Only had the laptop for a week or so, and I really can't be bothered with the "exchange game."

Do you think it's because it's brand new, and will "wear in" & stop?

Or would you return it?

 
More to the point; does this concern you.

If it annoys you then exchange it, if not keep it. To me it sounds like it should wear-in if its a coil.
It's intermittent.

It irritates me, because it's a brand new, expensive devise.

I don't have much luck with new things, if you remember I got my M1 MBP refunded under consumer law because of a couple of issues.

What makes you think it would "wear in"?

Exchange it then, problem solved.


I work in engineering and maintain/repair machines.
As stated before, I'm unlucky with new devices so my concern would be that there would be other issues with a replacement.

That's why I'm wondering if it will wear in and stop?

If I took it back, I'd just get my money back and go without.

Then if you continue to believe in having back luck, you're not being rational. There is no conspiracy that means you're being given defective units, so you may as well exchange it if you're unhappy.

That makes no sense since you obviously purchased the MacBook for a purpose. I would suggest researching this issue to see if it's widespread.

The hinge has a collar that is, essentially, one large spring. It is taught enough to keep the display in a specific place when you move it, like a counter-balancing effect.

Of the few other moving parts around it is a magnet that acts as a sensor.

I'm not going to go into any further detail as I'm guessing you'll talk yourself into not buying another one, but the chances are that spring is loosening up/

For you to be genuinely unlucky would mean that you must be at some sort of disadvantage when purchasing a product. You haven't said otherwise, so your luck is the same as everyone else's

Personally, if I was in the refund period I would just swap it as I live near an Apple Store. But I wouldn't be concerned either way as I work with mechanical things day in/out.

I appreciate you that you obviously enjoy the Mac community and that's great, but threads like this make me wonder whether you could have performed a lot more research - and then used your own judgement - before posting. That would provide the forum with a lot more information to actually help you. We don't know some very basic things, such as the config of your unit, when it was purchased, etc.

I close the lid gently, from the centre (I'm very careful with my devices.)

A few days ago, I was testing, and when closing slowly the noise would occur. If I closed the lid faster, the noise wouldn't be heard. Would this extra information help you to in your diagnosing/advise?

I have mental health issues, and find it difficult returning things and having to go through the process of testing all over again. Other than this noise (which is intermittent) the laptop appears to have no other issues. Including my biggest bugbear ... dead pixels.

So, bottom line, do you think the noise will stop over time?

Impossible to predict, sorry. But given the hinge mechanism won't be made from a soft metal, I think it's safe to assume that any wear over time will be minor. I wouldn't be too concerned.

So, bottom line, do you think the noise will stop over time?

All i hear is a 'thud' when the lid fully closes, even with volume up full i hear no 'little click'

If not ,please keep it.i know exactly how you feel ,I'm rn in the process of returning one out of 2 MBP ,and it's a pain

Do yourself a favor and keep this one ,u might have real troubles with the next one ,and you'll also lose time at exchanging them

I honestly don't know exactly what it is but I think it's likely you'll encounter even worse things with another unit so...

Lol the reason I requested an exchange was simply because the feel of the keyboard was rly worse compared to many units I tried in store...and since i type a lot,the kb does matter for me . basically there are two kind of kb,one with longer travel ,softer,smoother.

Another with shorter key travel,not as smooth,pretty dry/crisp



I got the second one .the other unit is unfortunately not much better (it is ,but just a tad...but its display looks yellowish to me ,ever seen that?)

Oh and also i had some weird noise in the first unit in certain circumstances,but I opened the Mac back and saw.nothing so idk ...

See,in my situation,i don't know which to keep ,and that's a pain

Fwiw the second Mac performs better in Geekbench,but by..1-2%...like in Geekbench CPU i have a score of 10 020 ,while the other sits at around 9900

I tried taking a picture, but couldn't quite get one.

Having said that, I never made much effort, because I'm sick of getting Apple products with issues (my new AirPods Pro for example, the case is losing charge when not in use & the buds are constantly showing as charging, even though they are at 100%) so I just boxed it up for return!

However, I got it back out again (I really couldn't be bothered with the Apple exchange game) and gently massaged what looked like chips, and they faded away.

It must have been simply that the outer display wasn't completely stuck down?

Try it with yours, if you have the same issue. Use a microfibre cloth (I used the black one, that used to be supplied with all Macs) and I massaged the areas away.

Here's irony for you: After I completed that last sentence, I closed the lid and heard the feint noise. Closed it several times more, and never heard a thing. I truly hope it's just because it's new, and it just needs wearing in/loosening up?

I know you've already answered this, but I have to ask again: Would you just keep it?

No other issues: Good screen with zero dead pixels (which is a miracle!) good speakers, good everything, really.

Well i've fixed many a laptop over the years and never heard a click like that. Normally when the machine is new, the hinge will make a squeaking sound due to the hinge being stiff and it needs to be worn it. On your machine it sounds like a washer in the hinge is catching on something or the hinge itself is catching on the plastic. If this was a non-apple machine I would have advised to get it repaired but as it is Apple and I do not know how the hinge mechanism works on these new macbooks, I can't properly advise you.

If it were me, return it.

The hinge could be catching on something and thus over time the thing it is catching on will wear down and no more clicking OR the clicking could be an indication that the hinge is going to or is about to fail.

Not worth the risk in my opinion, return it to be on the safe side.
