It is kind of wonky to compare pics to the camera on an iphone 5S.

Why not compare it to pics from Sony Experia Z3?

its widely know Sony makes the best camera sensors.

This could be Apple investment for the future 3D render tech. Think about Augmented Reality for FaceTime or normal call. When one place a call, a rendered visual of the receiver, complete with the hairline and a mole on his back neck, and his current facial expression appears in holographic mode.

The 3D mapping done it for me!
Imagine one day being able to take photo of an object, then send it to your 3D printer to replicate!

Shops would have to start banning cameras!

Already listed two of my medium format cameras for sale hoping the next iPhone will be able to replace them.

You will regret that! I got rid of my RZ back when digital was coming on hot and I now regret doing that. I found it far easier to compose an image on a medium format cameras view screen than on the tiny image in a DSLR. Plus those big negatives or slide are just gorgeous.

Sadly I think selling that camera is what lead to my declining interest in photography.

I can see this depth of field capability making the iPhone compete substantively with Lytro cameras but without any of the bulk.

Maybe not in time for this year's iPhone model, but possibly next year this sort of thing could completely turn photography on its head.

Thank you, I was surprised nobody else brought this up.

OMGZ it's better than the iPhone 5-- I want this in my 6S!!!!!! I'm so excited!!11!1!!!!!

Well, its clear that the next iPhones are going to have better cameras.

But which side of the phone?

You see such a camera that can detect depth now has application in gesture sensing. I could see these becoming front facing cameras while more advanced technology takes the rear position. I just imagine that Apple has a deeper interesting in these cameras including Mac Book 2 and the rest of the laptops.

OK, that's an exciting prospect I hadn't even thought of!

Never use my iPhone camera because it's crap and I'm certainly not going to use it in the future if they incorporate this crap technology. I don't believe these results. If it was that good they wouldn't be selling out to Apple. Seems like yet another bad decision by a bad CEO.

better yet, if they keep claiming dslr quality, why not put it up against an actual dslr.

of course it looks better than the 5s. thats not all that impressive

A lot will depend on what they mean by SLR-like. Anything you can do to improve the performance, of a small sensor, usually upscales nicely to something larger. OTOH, if they're looking at minimising noise, or DOF manipulation (either digitally, or through lens design), they may be onto something.

One law that has not yet been broken though, is this: The bigger the area the light hits, the better the image quality. This means my Four Thirds equipment produces a vastly better technical output compared compared to your typical phone. Likewise, a Nikon D800 produces vastly better technical output than my Olympus, while a Pentax 645D...... Well you should get the picture.

Every time I read someone claiming "SLR Image Quality" from the tiny sensors in phones my BS alarm goes off. An improvement on current mainstream tech in phones? I can believe that. "SLR Image Quality", I am remarkably skeptical.

For some strange reason, my Z3 compact's low light camera was just as bad as the 5s...
The picture quality of a dinner at a local restaurant showed up the same with both phones...

Because the information was from June 2014. Xperia Z3 was released in September 2014. This also explains why it's comparing with an iPhone 5S, not iPhone 6 or 6+.

I honestly thought the protruding lens was to have a magnetic lens attachments. I was so wrong :(

Do u like that protruding lens ?? Now your just being picky.

Ah yes,, now i see those nose hairs much more clearly... Thanks for that :p

Neat images.

I've read plenty about cameras that take multiple exposures to make a single high-res shot. You can even buy some nowadays. I've also read about using multiple smaller cameras to make higher-res images. But I could never figure out how that rumor about "SLR" like image quality was going to account for depth of field. This is absolutely brilliant, and simple once you realize how it works (although I'm sure the algorithms are quite complex). I'm really excited to see this technology in an iPhone. Hopefully the 6S will get it per the rumors, as hopefully Apple has been working with this company for a long time and is just now buying them for protection—perhaps having already cemented their plans for the 6S and verified that it will work and can be mass produced. That's the hope! I'd like to get a 6S and skip the 7 if I can manage. Was going to skip the 6S until I decided that I can't have this giant Plus for another year.

There is no way this is going to make it into the 6S/6S+, just not enough time.

If we can learn any thing from history. They totally can have it in the new iPhones. Touch ID was harder and it was done. If anything it will be constrained at the beginning as usual.
