A Macbook Pro from Heaven

To make a long story short:

I got a free 17inch Macbook pro 2.16 with 3year applecare alojng with a lot of other stuff.

For the long story:

So, 2 days ago, my ex-gf from 6 years ago calls me and tells me a guy she's been taking care of has died. I think to myself, ohh that sucks but why the **** do I need to know. She says that he had noone and that he told her to take everything in his apartment. She said she wanted to check it out with me. When I got there, you we couldn't open the door.

Please believe me when I say, there is STUFF stacked about 6 feet high. To make a very very long story short we found (She let me take all the stuff with a (*):

A brand new in box 17inch macbook pro with 3 year applecare*
A Canon Powershot s2 IS*
A Roland BR8 MultiTrack Recorder*
A Tascam Multitrack Recorder
5 Electric Guitars (One Fender Strat,One Gretsc-something, and some more) and 1 Acoustic*
1 Electric Bass*
1 Fender Vintage Amp*
2 Smaller Amps (probably vintage but haven't checked yet)*
A Sony 26inch TV and a DVD player
A lot of drum accessories*
About 15,000 (yes 15 thousand) books (i'll probably take a couple)
About 500-600 Porno Videos (about 200 of them are pissing porn) (some are actually very good)
Old 50s 60s and 70s comics*
About 1000 CDs*
Lots of VERY NICE clothing thats literally brand new.
Alot of hunting and pocket knives
A lot of art accessories

And come to think of it, we've only cleaned out about 5% of the mess. I will take pics next time I go to the apartment. I don't know how this guy lived, this place was extremely filthy. I washed my hair afterwards and it was black from dust. It took us about 6 hours looking through **** to figure out all this stuff. He still has MUCH more buried underneath somewhere. We wanna cut up the mattresses and see if he left any money in there...

I'll post pics next time I go to clean. But, damn, I'm really happy with all the free **** I got. He left her a debit card with about $15,000 in the bank account, but no pin number. Shes looking through his stuff to see if we can find it. She's keeping the money, because she took care of him. Again, this is nothing illegal. It is on his will that the stuff in the apartment goes to her. She is his next of kin and his heir. We went to the funeral and prayed for him. God rest his soul.

He was obviously crazy. I think he was a major packrat. He had hundreds of empty Duane Reade backs and empty waterbottles and stuff. He told her to keep it and give it to whoever needed it.

We're donating the clothing to the Salvation army, and the books to a library.

Did he leave a will outlining this? Not sure where this all took place, but I would check what your state/prov laws are....in some cases the entire estate reverts back to the state. Or, if a more distant relative is around, they may have claim. Anyways, heck of a mess if he did not leave a will.....

And no, I'm not rejoicing in his death. I never knew the guy. He died becuase he was a drug user and a chronic alchoholic. he was a smart man though, graduated columbia med school.

Possession is 9/10'ths of the law... so, if they guy had any relatives, there's a 90% chance your ex-girlfriend is going to be sued - regardless if there was a will or not.

(yeah, extremely flawed logic... but, seriously if the guy had relatives then your ex should be pretty careful about what she's doing and may want to consult with a lawyer)

I haven't taken any of the stuff home yet. Its still all in the apartment, we're just trying to organize it. I haven't taking anything yet, just taken dibs on it.

The books and clothes are all going to charity. I'll tell her to call her lawyer first before we remove anything. Thanks for the tips guys. I don't wanna do anything to upset the law, but it sounds as though its all in order. Then again, teh law its a bitch so even if it does look good on paper it might be ****d otherwise.

It may not have been a will. A living trust would accomplish the same thing, and his gf might have been the trustee to that living trust. If such is the case, I don't believe a lawyer is needed.

Anyone who's saying they'd just leave all of the stuff or give it all to charity is lying or extremely well off.

I'd personally find a cause that he could or did benefit from and donate a lot of the stuff simply because I wouldn't have a use for a lot of it. The techy stuff I'd keep if I had the choice, as well as a bit of the money if it was rightfully mine. But there's no reason half of it can't go to helping drug users and alcoholics find help, those who couldn't afford the kind of care that he got.

Just to give you the impression of a law student, you should probably consult a lawyer, and in the least you should contact your city hall for information. Will's aren't just handled by the people that they are given to; others are involved in the legal process of transferring one's possessions. Particularly sketchy here is the need for a PIN number to take this man's money. If this situation were legit, you should not need a PIN. Even if it is legit, your ex is likely trying to avoid gift/inheritance taxes (this is illegal). Just be careful what she's getting you involved in. It glares of illegality, particularly the bank account issue.
