just went from a tc to a dedicated synology nas and love it, i'd point you to either a ds413j or ds414, both 4 bay devices so you can easily scale over 4tb including redundancy
The question is: do you want to back up 1 computer or several ? Is your computer a desktop or a laptop ?
If you only have 1 desktop computer, you don't need a NAS. A DAS (Direct attached storage) will be faster (provided you found a FireWire one), cheaper, more simple to manage and 100% compatible with Time Machine.

Well from a small research i've made, here is a number of stuff one can do using a NAS and correct me if im wrong!
- downloading using the torrent client ability while computer is turned off
- file access from either local computers or ones that are remote
- faster speeds than USB2 or FW800
- connect a printer to it and printing through and iphone/ipad etc.
Now about the compatibility thing with TMachine, i have no clue about that!
The speed is heavily dependant on the NAS you choose.
Here are my results, taken from my DNS-325 and Mac Mini with USB2.0 external drive. https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/18013924/
yes this one
It certainly looks better and cools the drives without a fan (love that).
1. Does it show on the desktop as one drive?
2. Can i use it as a regular drive or is there extra software that i need to use in order to copy files to it?
3. Can i use both of the drives, or RAIDo is sat automatically without being able to disengage?
