stevetim, +∞ on the honesty.

It's interesting that this thread started with someone mentioning honesty and integrity and everyone offering congratulations and support. It's got around 20 replies. In another thread someone brags about stealing $150 from the Apple store and it gets twice as many replies congratulating someone on being a thief.

Well it's the self reward that counts. Who gives a crap about other people congratulating you, if you feel guilty as sh&t.

If you don't feel guilty then you should be slapped.

It would have came back to bite you in the arse anyway, always does.

I saved £140 once through a mistake on a computer part, very happy. The next day my motherboard broke, that £140... gone.

Happens to me all the time when ever I do anything "wrong", shame it doesn't happen to everybody :p

I agree it's only a matter of what you believe yourself and not who says what. I just find it sad that twice as many people will congratulate someone for stealing as for being honest.

Good to see some honesty.

What would have happened though if the buyer had been distracted and had been paying for it by card? So the sales assistant puts the card transaction through for $20, your man signs without even checking the amount and leaves.

The buyer might take a month to realise what's happened when he gets his next credit card statement. So would Apple catch up with him before then? Is there anything they could legally do given it was their fault?

He wouldn't have even got through the doors. You don't think those things have security chips on them? Imagine the alarm going off and him freezing w/ 75 people all starting at him...and maybe getting jumped by the nerds in blue & the goons in black.

If a buyer somehow managed to get home without paying and if Apple found it before the buyer they'd just ask for payment. It wouldn't get ugly unless the buyer refused to pay.

It must be a classic case of misery loves company. I think all those people encourage it to reinforce their less than honest tendencies.

Congrats to the OP you did the right thing. I'm actually really relieved to see the response to this thread, it warms the heart after going through that one about the $150 fraud. I was starting to think the Mac community had loose all sense of morals. Since the OP of *that* thread is, maybe they're all switchers. :D

I ordered one of those multi-guitar rack stands...when it arrived the salesman was busy & quickly gave me the cardboard box which I took home...only to find TWO guitar stands in there...probably worth $60 each or so. I hummed & hawed about it but I have a too much of a conscience...depsite friends telling me to just keep it, (its only a guitar stand and they're a huge company) I decided that by even asking them I knew what the right thing to do was. So when I went back to the store to ask the salesman if there was supposed to be 2 in the box...and if not I'd pay for the 2nd one or return it. Hey looked it up in the inventory and since nothing was missing he told me it was more trouble than it was worth so I should just keep it & put it to good use (which I have). I just didn't need to have a guilty conscience over $60 (even though it was only an oversight) but I did feel WAY better about things after that.

That's exactly what almost happened when I got it. The girl said the amount, "Twenty one thirty nine", without saying "Two thousand one hundred thirty nine dollars".

I knew the amount with tax would be like over $2160 so it didn't make sense. That's when I asked her the amount again, and then she said "Twenty one dollars and thirty nine cents". I almost NEVER check my receipts either, and I wouldn't have in this case as I wanted to get home quicky to start up the new baby.

If I wouldn't have been paying attention at that moment, the outcome could have been very different. And I have a feeling it wouldn't have turned out in my favor after all is said and done if I didn't look at my receipt for a couple weeks.

Thanks for all the good comments...mates.:D
