The first iPhone I ever owned was the 4 and when I heard that larger iPhones were coming out I was thrilled, and was an early buyer of the 6 Plus, then last year upgraded to the 7 Plus as I wanted the 2x camera, photography being one of my interests and uses for the iPhone. I got a beautiful Jet Black 7 Plus which I loved and when I first heard of the new X I was rather sceptical and and at first was not going to buy for three reasons;
  1. Was not sure how effective would be Face ID particularly as I wear glasses
  2. Did not like the look of the notch
  3. Was not keen on the new aspect ratio with narrower screen than the Plus
So I did not rush to order on the first order day, but a little after launch visited my local Apple store to check out, particularly the 2x camera (which I use the most), as I had heard it better on the X than 7 Plus. Just a few tests at the store found the 7 Plus and 8 Plus cameras much alike to my eyes, but the X was clearly better. The results looked more like from a DSLR, with considerably less pixelation.

So I went ahead and ordered a silver X PLus 256Gb. Waiting time was 3 weeks and it at last arrived Friday morning.

I must say the X has exceeded my expectations in virtually every respect. The Face ID works flawlessly - it has worked every time, which is even better than Touch ID which occasionally failed when my finger was greasy or wet. I just look at the phone and it opens without fail which still seems incredible.

I have only once gone to hit the missing home button, on the first day, but actually much prefer the swipe guestures. I always thought having a separate button as part of the navigation on a touch screen device unintuitive. In fact I remember the first time I ever picked up an iphone looking for something on the screen to return to the home screen.

The swipe up from the bottom seems to work well and I have no trouble getting the app switcher. I am not one to often use the phone single handed, so swiping from the top right for control center does not worry me. What I particularly like is being able to swipe sideways across the bottom to switch apps. A lot quicker and very useful facility.

The screen looks great, but to be honest I don’t see much difference in quality from the 7 Plus screen - they are both perfect to my eyes.

I have so far only once been able to use the camera for real, but that seems just as good as I hoped.

The Animoji my wife loves, so much so that she now wants an X to replace her 6 Plus. Thankfully order times are now down to 10 days.

For my initial concerns, the notch I forgot after 5 minutes and really does not worry me at all in use. The narrow screen has surprisingly not worried me too much either and I do like how the X feels in my hand and in my pocket, so I now have no wish to go larger even if Apple does bring out a new Plus next year, particularly as my iPad Pro 12.9” gets used for most work when I am out and about.

So no regrets - I am absolutely delighted with my new iPhone X.

I just picked up the X after going from Pixel 2 XL -> iPhone 8 Plus -> iPhone X. I posted these in another subforum, but

First impressions

  • This device is SMALL. Like, really small. I feel like I’m back in the iPhone 6 days
  • The screen has a really nice look to it. The blue shift is very late to the point where it is basically unnoticeable.
  • FaceID was about as easy as TouchID to set up and works mostly as well. And by mostly, I mean about 75% of the time at first blush.
  • A number of key apps still don’t support the large screen size. In that case, the iPhone X is significantly behind the larger screen size of the iPhone Plus series. I expect Google will get their act together, but it’s not a great experience right now.
  • The notch is only annoying when I really look at it.
  • The lack of home button is a pleasure and while I understand why people wouldn’t want it, I don’t mind the bar at the bottom of the screen.
It's been a couple of hours, but I love the device so far.

I’ve gotten used to the more narrow screen, now the only time I notice it is when I hold my wife’s 7 Plus. But it doesn’t really bother me to be honest.... although if Apple comes out with a plus version next year I will be all over it.
