A question about iphone push email

Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased an iphone and i am wanting to set up email. On my phone plan i have access to 250mb of data. Just want to know that if I set up email (through gmail) and have the push option on, will the phone always be connected to the internet? I am concerned this will waste my data. OR do you only use your data usuage when you actually CHECK the emails after the notification comes through?? If anyone could help that would be great. I dont want to set up email until I can confirm this cause I really dont want to go over my data plan as it can be quiet expensive. 😱
