I got a question to all of you regarding to this picture:

If you compare the frame around the display between the 11 and 13-inch MBA you can see that bottom and top size are equal, but left and right differ.
I know, this is because the 16:9-display of the 11 inch, but doesn't this look like a picture frame?

I really enjoy the design of the MBA, I would even say I love it, but... this is kinda annoying me.
It looks like you could easily get a bigger display onto the 11.
Maybe it would help if the colour of this surrounding was black.
I don't know what to think about this. And it's only about the 11, the frame in correlation to 13inch-display width and height is great.

I am really excited about your opinions and don't bother me if there already was a thread concerning this issue. Thank you

    Hi HanneS.

I don't really see that there is a design issue here to be honest and you do answer your own question when you mention the different aspect ratio in the 11.

Seeing as you ask though, the reason for all of this is that displays are not made by apple. They are usually bought in from LG for example who mass produce both TN and IPS panels for DELL, Apple and all other major manufacturers.

These display manufacturers have standard sizes and ratios, one of which is the 11.6" 16:9 which you will find in numerous ultraportables and netbooks now.

The problem here is that there isn't really another option for apple but to chose that panel as otherwise production costs would be huge as they would have to commission their own.

I hope this sort of answers part of your query.

Thank you Alfieg. I absolutely agree with you, but doesn't this indicate to my problem? You say that Apple must buy available displays. And I said that the display for the 11 does not fit perfect such as the 13 does.
@ Max: it's not about the total size of the 11

I honestly believe it has to to do with what the supplies offer and what Apple can get. Then again I could be way off...

your question is very vague...picture frame? what are you referring by that?

    Sorry for that

I'm not very good at editing photos, but maybe you can see my query from this.
The red and orange areas equal on both MBAs.
The blue area differs. In my opinion the marked areas are way to big in correlation to the display size for the 11 inch.

Don't you think so? I compared this in the store. It does not look very nice for me in comparison to the 13inch-MBA

Likely this is a result of aspect ratios that make sense, as well as screen resolutions that Apple can procure in bulk.

It's a combination of the first two replies.

Having only an 11.6 inch screen to choose from as far as cheap "off-the-shelf" components (as opposed to having one designed and made especially for the Air), Apple used the readily available 11 inch screen. And in fitting in a full-size keyboard something had to make up the difference in size between the bottom case (with Full-size keyboard) and the lid (with small screen).

    Hence, wide bezel.

Designed it that way so Apple can sell you another MBA that actually makes much better use of the physical area the current one already has. Think about it, how impressive would it be when Apple advertises the next generation MBA to be just as thin and light but have an entire inch more screen real-estate. ;)

It's a great idea from you. I also thought something like that, because the 11 inch is far away from perfection to me :)

Thanks for your opinion, glad I'm not alone with this
