Love how people can defend apple with this move. It's like they don't give a **** about their customers and just want to create a media frenzy in front of their stores on launch day.

You do realize that apple doesn't actually components inside of the iphone? It's lazy people like you that come late to work, who work for accounting for a company that does audits for the company that makes the water cutting tool that cuts the glass for the iphone, and is in short supply because of you. :)

Or maybe they don't have as many as past releases so they would rather make sure customers who are willing to drive to the stores are taken care of (since it's much more of an inconvenience to drive down to an Apple store to be told "we don't have any" than to sit behind a computer and have to wait a week or two) rather than the ones online who wouldn't think twice to trash them over any delay?

If I was ran business and had limited supply thats what I would do. Take care of my physical customers first, then my online ones.

The main reason is probably stock constraints.

Besides that, making people go to store (which they inevitably will because they want the product) offers options for cross-selling; accessories, AppleCare, and other Apple products.

It's just business. They are, after all, a business.

I'll bet they have manufacturing problems that are keeping the yields down. For a while the 5S might be pretty scarce. Just wait until it's in stock or available to order online. It's not the end of the world.

I will just order the day of introduction. I refuse to stand in line for a phone. Food maybe but not a phone when my 5 works perfectly.

Then you are going to get your iPhone later than the rest of us.

If you want it that bad go pay someone to stand in line for you, otherwise you can wait like everyone else.

Let the one who stand in line have that privilege. I work for a living and my time is worth more than spending the day in line, all day, for a phone. Have a good time.

At least you can get exercise.

I don't think standing in line qualifies. Perhaps if they had everyone jog in place?

This is hardly something to be irritated about. You have a problem and you wanted attention.

Mission accomplished?

Ummm. No. I felt like griping. That's all.

You wanted to respond snarkily to look clever?

That's pretty much my real take on it.

Yeah. I know. Does not mean I have to like it, though. ;)

It is entirely possible that there will be enough inventory to go around and while there will be lines on the first day or two, Apple stores and resellers will not run out of stock. We won't know until the 20th.

As has been mentioned in previous posts, if Apple is interested in driving more traffic to its stores (and resellers where there are no Apple Stores) then it makes business sense not to offer pre-orders over the Internet. There will be many new customers who will never have stepped inside an Apple Store, and who are ripe for upselling and/or cross-selling with other Apple products that they would not have considered online.

If you don't want to wait in line, just order it on the 20th and wait for it to be delivered.

I would like for their to be preorders too, but I don't need it enough on launch day to stand in line. I'll just do the same thing I always do; order from the Apple website or app and wait for the delivery man a couple days after.

I have went from absolutely upgrading before the announcement to probably not upgrading simply because of the preorders. I can't take a day off to stand in line and I'm too impatient to order the same day other people will have it in hand....so I may just hold off till I can simply walk in the store and get it.

This is a smart way to look at things.

Most people go crazy about getting it on the very first day, what is the big deal with waiting a few days to have it delivered?

I pre-ordered my 5s today but through my business store manager so there is that option if you can use it

Edit, to clarify on this contentious issue, the business team ask you how many you want so they can try to allocate stock in advance. No guarantee of launch day delivery, so we shall wait and see. It's most likely in store pickup for allocated stock on the day, like last year or perhaps delivery for the 21st but I think that's a sat so probably the following Monday.

Valid Rant

This really isn't about why there are no preorders. Color me indifferent, but I do not care why they decided not to do preorders.

I care that Apple skipped out on them for the 5s entirely.

I refuse to stand in line to buy this phone when I have been a loyal customer who has owned every version of their iPhone product.

It's a slap in the face to the regulars. Like I wanna take a day off (or worse, attempt to get any work done in line) to buy a phone on launch day.

And buy them? I do. 64gb, AppleCare+. Hell. I even figure I'll give their case a try.

I know there are plenty of people here on MacRumors like me. We all represent a steady revenue stream.

And, by refusing preorders, Apple just told everyone that repeat customers just don't matter much.

I'll buy a phone. When I can order one.

I really have zero interest in Android. But, damn. Really, Apple?

When Apple started the pre-order process, it made getting an iPhone on launch day much more convenient. Now, what logic is there to take that convenience away from your core customers. Makes no sense. With 5C available for pre-order, it seems that 5C is the flagship model, not the other way around.

A company such as Apple that prides itself on excellent Customer Support/Service, should rethink this move.

...I have enjoyed preorder day for awhile now. Way to kick a fun little tradition in the ass, Apple.

Standing in line is way more of a tradition than preorders.

If you want it right away, go early in the morning and you won't have to miss a day of work. Otherwise you'll get it when your order is fulfilled.

Never stood in line for one. I don't do long lines. Or camp out for tickets. Or go to Black Friday sales. ;)

Yeah. I agree. I get that they may have their reasons. Some might even be good reasons.

I think they are afraid of massive amounts of online pics of iPhone 5S's with scratches and dings. THAT is a more likely scenario.

I waited in line on Launch Day for the 4 and pre-ordered the 5.

My pre-order arrived at 10AM, but since I was shipped someone else's phone (a 32GB instead of a 64GB) it was not active until 2PM.

I had sold my 4S already and was using a dumb phone. It was a little annoying to watch people walk out from Apple with working phones while I stared at my paperweight.

That being said, I have the time, so I'll wait.

That's exactly why I've got such a big problem with no pre orders. I love the whole thing. The getting up early to get your pre order in, the worry until the confirmation email comes, the following of the package tracking, the waiting for the delivery on launch day. I love all that stuff.

It's all good fun!

I'm with you man. I hear the repliers responses but I don't care! But I am with you 100%. At least I dont' have to set an alarm tonight...

I'm well aware of my ordering options. Have you not ever found something irritating?

It's not a huge thing, in the grand scheme of things. I know that. ;)

FWIW, I'm with ya OP. I also really dug the tradition of preorder day--getting up in the middle of the night (EDT), hitting F5 starting at about 2:50 just in case, getting all excited when the Apple Store went down and displayed its yellow post-it message, trying AT&T in the meantime, bitching and moaning on MR when I could only get most of the way through the process...and finally, SUCCESS! Usually with the app. Then being too excited to go back to sleep until it was too late to really get any sleep. :) It was an awesome little fun annual thing. I'm gonna miss it this year.

Exactly! Macrumors has had a wonderful community of iPhone waiters and watchers every launch day.

Well. There is that! :)

Yeah. Maybe next year.

Perhaps some of the Apple (employee) apologists can submit a note to corporate on our behalf. ;)

I disagree for 1 reason-since there are no pre-orders for the 5s this time around, the demand for walk-ins will be bigger than ever.

Walked into my AT&T store at 9am, they had plenty 32gb grey iPhone's... the demand isn't there this year, I really don't think the demand is there this time around - the iPhone 6 will be a different story though.
