Growing up, one of my good friends in high school lived in a fairly nice 1920s era home that had this. I never really saw it in action. Is it a big energy waster or is it not too unreasonable?

But surely the central vac was quite new.

My parents installed it around 6 years ago. I think they like it, but I don't know if they really know that not all vacuums are created equal.

Ahhh, really? I assumed it was after the 20s, but I figured it was more of a 1950s "new era of living" sort of technology. I didn't realize they were still being installed.

The house was built in 1986. :p

A powerful vacuum plumbing system runs throughout my parents' house so that they can plug the included vacuum hose into any one of 6 wall "sockets" designed for the hose, and vacuum without ever changing a bag, or carrying the vacuum unit around. When they want to vacuum another area of the house, they just unplug the hose from the wall (the hole in the wall then seals itself), and plug the hose into another vacuum socket. I don't think this technology has been common for longer than 20-30 years. You must be thinking of "central heating". ;)

Busiest area Dyson factory repair dept beware

I am a fan of design and function and thus was straght away into Dyson having bought two at work and one at home
Two handles broke and the other lost the will to suck
stupidly bought more thinking it was staff abuse for the handle s (have any handles broken on any vacuum of anyone except Dyson) not to me or anyone I know.
the next generation god knows which model the mainly purple with a motorised head brush all died engineer "yeah standard problem brush goes"
I was one of the few who bought the Dyson washing machine with contra rotating drum, for you americans this means the metal bit that the dirty laundry gets wet in is able to spin both ways at the same time
I you went on extended holiday the thing seized and you had to have an engineer call out on your return home
I live 10 miles from the Dyson site that used to make/ service all the stuff until he went for the low wages option, strange the prices are not 20% of when they were made in UK
And was told that the busiest part of the factory is repairs and replacement
Dyson in my experience is Design before function
buy Miele and you dont the funky :De lorean design you get Volkswagen type reliability:D

The "Rest of the Story".....cheers Paul

Just thought I'd finish this thread off. Well, I did it. I was vacuuming with the Hoover and was just fed up with the darn thing. Heavy, noisy, hose that was a pain in the @$$ and dumping the little canister was gross. I went back to Amazon and read EVERY one of their customer reviews for the Dyson DC 25. BOOM! I was there!!! Ordered it that night and it came later that week. WOW! This is one slick vacuum. First, I noticed in some of the reviews that there was some actual complaining about the packaging and the being able to get the unit out of the box due to the styrofoam. No problems, they must have changed that as mine was in 3 pieces that were packed in cardboard packaging (off to the recycling thank you). I put the unit together in minutes....snap snap. Now sweat de da. Then it was off to testing. The unit is quiet or at least quieter than the Hoover (also a tornado style unit) and it is much better at maneuvering with the "ball". Really nice. The hose/wand in the handle is neat. The larger canister is nice, especially in that you hit a button and it pops out. Take it to the trash can and hit another button and bottom opens and the "yuckie stuff falls out". No touchie the yuckie stuff. Cool.
One of the recurring items in the customer reviews was that "their houses actually smelled better" after using the Dyson. Well, can't confirm that yet as we haven't been using it that much. Think that this may be due to the 2 hepa filters in the unit. (they have to cleaned....rinsed out ... every 3 months). As some of you have commented....Dyson seems to be the Apple of the vacuum world. I agree, the unit actually looks nice....neat...cool. Did I mention a 5 yr guarantee???? I agree with only one comment/complaint of owners. The unit will always start up in the brush mode. You have to hit a button to stop the beater. Wish that you could "tell" it what you wanted b4 startup but a minor point. Did I mention that this thing "sucks"....in a good way:). Amazon had the best price I could find but other have purchased with coupons at Bed & Bath for even lower but I decided to go with Amazon. If you are even thinking of a new vacuum I'd recommend the DC 25. Cheers
