I think that's it right there. To read the temp, you'd need an instrument that is capable of that and AFAIK the iPhone does not come with that kind of device inside.
Heh, if you run a video game the temp would seem to be hotter if the sensor was inside the device.

The iPhone doesn't have a thermometer. Years ago I saw a thermometer that plugs into the headphone jack. Not sure if it worked or if it's still available.

It would be easier and cheaper to simply buy a traditional residential thermometer.
