... Any thread that compares the iPhone against an Android phone just brings on a flame war between Fanboys and Fandroids. I don't understand why we can't have a simple comparison thread without all the bickering over which OS is better.

Maybe it's because people call each other fanboys and fandroids.

Because some people really are? If you can't have a proper conversation about competing OSes without bashing one or the other, you are a fanboy.

But calling one a fanboy does not solve the situation. It's just fuel for the fire. Essentially it's no different from calling someone an idiot and hence name-calling is prohibited.

Typically, if someone has any different opinion, they are called a fanboy/iSheep/fandroid or some other derogatory term

Unfortunately, the tolerance for differing opinions is ridiculously low for many users

No one has offered any good arguments for why they HAVE to read threads they don't want to see.

Pride? Really. A competitor sub forum is "bloat?" That's not an acceptable reason. Avoidance is not an accetable way of life. Apple is the most discussed mobile and PC manufacturer of the day. When somebody creates a thread about competitive equipment to Apple's, you expect diehard fans to ignore it or do expect them to discuss it? Give them a place. Silly. If you can't come up with a good reason not to start a subforum, just say so. If you like the amount of hits dissension creates, say that, too. But if "bloat" is the best you got, save that BS for another day.

No one is talking about pride. As for bloat, any forum that's added will be bloat; question is whether or not it's worth it, and we disagree there.

In this particular case you don't agree with how it's handled, which is fine. You make that clear when you call the current state of affairs "unacceptable". But you've got to remember that this is a case of you disagreeing with how things are done, not us avoiding anything. If we wanted to avoid the issue, we could've simply ignored this thread.

It's still my opinion that no one has presented any good reasons for not ignoring threads one isn't interested in. It almost seems as if people click on them, read them, even participate in them, and get annoyed at the subject (which they disagreed with in the first place). That's not a reason to change the forum structure.

As has been pointed out, the problem is members calling each other fanboys and fandoids. ;) I suspect if members ignored the threads they're not interested in, there wouldn't be much of a problem here.

We do disagree. What you see as bloat, I see as organization. Bloat to me is having subforums with threads that are out of place. If the iPhone forum was called the Phone forum, the Galaxy S 3 threads, and the like, wouldn't be out of place.

True. And if it was a "Phone" forum MR would soon be overtaken by Android fans.

I think we're barking up the wrong tree guys. The decision has been made and apparently is no longer open for discussion (at least one that will have any effect).

This is it. As a moderator in another place (http://www.clubdelphi.com) I understand the issue. Is summarized like this:

Build a place for alligators and they will come.

A subforum is like open a new bar in the town, that say "All people interested to find people to think this way, here".

I bet that build a android-focused sub forum will increase dramatically the # of android-only users that will come here. So, will increase the undesired effect that the OP express.

And a VERY good example is the political/social sub forum. MC is the only tech forum I know that political/social (or how I summarized: Atheist VS Theist, Dems VS Rep + Gay related stuff) dominated so furiously the attention grab. Because I live in Latin-America, I find entertainment and sometimes informative the sub forum (when talk about news non-related to the battles I outline before) but still.

So, I visit this daily and ALWAYS a social/political stuff is in "Todays post". I can't remember a day where this not happened (probably exist, I'm talking about impressions, not facts). How interested I'm about such thing? Zero.

Because EXIST a place for it, the people/talks find a place to call it home, and make it big.

Especially if is a topic where a significative number of people want to discuss & trolling.

As I've said, it's fine that you disagree. But I also think it's important to keep the level of discussion civil. Dissing other opinions than your own by calling them avoidance and BS isn't constructive, and certainly isn't the way to be taken seriously.

Come now. You've continually stated you've seen no good reasons to create a sub forum and we're on pg 3 of this thread and there's been many other similar threads over the years. How is that not dissing everyone else's ideas? Your suggestion is avoidance, so I'm not sure how that can be construed as offensive. The BS part, ok, I crossed a line with that and I apologize.

Could you please explain why Android phone discussions are left in the iPhone forum and not moved to the Industry forum?

You continue to insist that disagreement with your opinion is avoidance, and now you say it's dissing. I guess I can't be any clearer than I have been. The fact of the matter is that not all suggestions will become realities, and someone will always prefer that things are done another way. On this particular issue, you would've preferred that we organised things differently. We get that. But there are also members who think it's good the way it is.

This has been explained before. Our policy is that members can post about competing products in the most closely related forum. Some members have or have had iPhones as well as phones with competing OSs, and even if they don't the membership here tends to be interested in competing products. The iPhone forum has the closest relevant user base.

I'll say it again: If you're not interested in a particular thread, just don't click on it. As long as the threads are clearly marked with good titles (and we've explained what to do if they're not), and as long as we continue to deal with trolls (not only in the iPhone forum, but throughout the forums), this shouldn't be a situation you can't live with.

I believe you have been misunderstanding me. Your suggested action as described below is what I'm terming avoidance:

So it seems I will continue to disagree with MR on the handling of competitor products. Maybe some more eloquent than I will convince you down the road. Until then, we'll continue to see this topic again and again, but don't worry, I'll just avoid it next time. ;)

As you can tell by my lack of replies, I too have given up on this. The Admin's will not budge on the issue, even though the majority of Android related posts are flame bait, trolling, and end up with everyone getting bitchy.

Id always considered macRumors to be a professional place, however letting this childish behaviour continue tells me otherwise. "ah but just avoid it or report it" right? Funny how the Admin's manage to be on here all the time yet miss these posts for themselves and need us to report them before anything (if anything) is done.

Its fine though, I dont post here a great deal and I certainly never get wound up by trolls so whether Im here or not makes little difference to me, its just a shame the Admins dont take out the trash :/

After beaing harassed by several Android phanatics here I've decided to ask for my account to be deleted. It gets old reporting posts and posters and nothing being done.

I'm sure that other sites will appreciate my visiting them and increasing their ad revenue.

You're saying right out that we turn a blind eye to trolling. That's a serious accusation and it's not true.

The most prevalent problem I've seen in threads about Android isn't the fact that the thread is created to troll. There are some of those, of course, and we take care of them as soon as they're brought to our attention. But in my experience they're in the minority. There's a problem that's much more prevalent, and much more time consuming to moderate: members who aren't interested in the thread posting off-topic complaints about the fact that the thread exists, and those same members making insulting comments to those who are trying to discuss.

That's why I keep asking why some members can't stop themselves from clicking on threads they're not interested in. ;)

But you keep saying that when it goes against human nature. <shrug>

What you are suggesting will not happen any sooner than bottlenecks at accident scenes for traffic on both sides of the divided highway.
