Maybe everyone else knows about this, I just stumbled onto it by accident.
In Safari I usually open a link using "CMD-click" to open the page in a new tab, then I close that tab to return one level higher. Sometimes I forget the CMD and the page refreshes; no big issue there, just hit the Back arrow and you've returned.
However, did you know if you click on the Back arrow and hold it down, it lists the last ten or so pages you've been to, in order, so you don't have to go to the History dropdown. Neat, and I hope I remember this when I want to go back a few pages, instead of clicking the Back arrow repeatedly. FWIW.

Also works in Finder (and in Path Finder for those who use it).
And in Firefox on Windows.

Thanks for posting. I didn't know about it either.
