So... Just for fun, and following the incessant discussions about Tahoe's new UI, I decided to make a quick comparison with two screen grabs side by side. On the left is a Finder window in Sequoia, on the right the same window in Tahoe. Traffic lights are positioned EXACTLY the same way on both OSes and at the same distance from the Window's edges. Same with the text. In fact, the Finder window in both cases is actually the same size, it's not bigger in Tahoe.

So just to put a little perspective on this so-called redesign "debacle", there is actually NO "wasted space" on Tahoe.

The controls are on the floating sidebar which implies they control the sidebar and not the full window...just terrible UI/UX design.

That’s the most baffling part of all of it.
I remember having that exact thought when I saw the first shots of the new UI many months ago.

Anybody just thinking about it logically should recognize that it doesn’t make any sense like this.
It really makes you wonder who these designers are and how they were trained.

A fair assumption some of these folks were hired in from the outside. Those in leadership positions brought their teams and dogmas with them. People should stop dreaming about Apple « culture » and the Jobs era. That train has left long ago. There has been enough turnover and churn over the years that the Apple employee pool is more like a mishmash of Silicon Valley and international IT « talent ». Liquid Glass / Tahoe and IOS 26? Full speed ahead and damn the torpedos. Not likely we will see a Trashcan or Touchbar mea culpa. Might as well get used to it.

I can imagine that most of you are concerned about what it looks like, but,
my personal interest puts the functionality of Tahoe higher on my list.

Concrete: what functionality is/seems lost in Tahoe?

Example: some releases ago we lost cron (automated background commands); well, I was lucky, I could write my own.
But there are limits .....
;JOOP!

who can't accept that tahoe is the current OS
I don't think anyone is going to disagree that its the current operating system, its really more about how apple screwed the pooch on usability and how for an upgrade it seems to be a step backward. Will Apple address some of the short comings in the coming months? Yes, but remember the major feature for this upgrade was the overhaul of the user interface and that's what is facing the fiercest criticisms, Many people, just not on MR find it less user friendly, less efficient.

In one of the iOs threads, when I posted about my distaste for liquid [gl]ass, they said I could disable it - which is true, but then I asked why bother upgrading, other other features are there that warrant my need to start making wholesale changes to the settings to undo what apple implemented in the first place?

I'm not understanding your point? Are you saying there's been complaints about wasted space? In all honesty I thought most of the complaints have centered about the transparent/monochromatic nature of the UI (particularly in ios) that makes it a lot more difficult to use

I was looking forward to having something closer to OSX's Aqua UI, but that wasn't the case. I do feel having a visual appealing UI is important, just look at how bad windows UI had looked when they transitioned over to that flat icon look (windows 8 & windows 10). But my criticisms are centered at how poorly liquid glass works with the icons and other graphical elements being colorless and transparent.

It's not. Sidebars hover the windows now, instead being a translucent part of the windows, so most of their color is taken from the window color, instead of what's under the window.

Here is how it is when overlayed directly instead:

It's more transparent. Oh, and the menu bar is higher too.

Beautiful ... how do you switch the transparency off?

It's been mentioned in a few threads that the new UI takes more real estate. So in some cases yes, it does occupy a few more pixels and in some cases no, it doesn't. And I keep wondering, does it affect usability? Does it change the way the OS work? Does it make it "ugly"? Not in the least from where I stand. Does transparency affect legibility? Not for me. I just like the new look and I'm getting used to the things that looked a bit different before. And all that is really not a big deal to me.

In dark mode, which is what I use, Tahoe's UI looks great and I'm enjoying the new OS and new functionalities I didn't have before (just got a new Mac)
