Whenever I download a program (like firefox) it always shows up as a disk on my desktop. How do I actually install the file onto my computer?

Sorry for the stupid question.

What you download is a disk image (DMG file) that expands to a mountable drive with the program inside of it. You are then supposed to drag the application to your Applications folder in order to install it. That's it!

More details here...

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people. But I don't think you're one of them! That's a pretty common question, as the Mac drag and drop installation can be a bit ... surprising in its simplicity coming from Windows.

After dragging the file to the app folder, you can then trash the dmg image.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

EDIT: snap.

The only stupid question is the one not asked. One of the purposes of this forum is to be able to benefit from the experience of others.
