Lol, I would hope it would mop the floor with the iPhone 4S camera. How much did you pay for it? Like $2,000?

Yeah, about that much, lol. I have no complaints about the 4s camera, I think it is the best recorder out there for it's size. I just was laughing when they were comparing the phone with an older Canon camera with by the look of the IQ is a kit lens. With that combo, I wouldn't use the Canon as a recording device ever if I had a 4s in my pocket.

They uploaded it to YouTube @ 720p. YouTube supports 1080p uploads.

Not only that, but why on earth did he choose a dusk/dawn scene to shoot? The sky is overexposed and the land is underexposed. Not to mention he's not close enough to anything to see any real detail, 1080P or not. How do I -1 something?

I would like to see the 4S compared with the SGII seeing as they are both 1080P smart phones.

I doubt there will be much difference between the GS2 and 4S camera/video quality. Maybe there is some difference in color/saturation, but nothing too much that would bother the owners of either of these 2 devices.

GS2 video details: I don't know the bitrate in 4S. GS2 uses a 17Mbps (for Full HD) and 12Mbps (for HD) with mono recording in stock. Though it can easily be modified 48000 khz @ 192 kbit and Full HD @ 30Mbps bitrate.

It's already confirmed that it's a Sony sensor. Previously mentioned here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/02/sony-ceo-casually-mentions-hes-supplying-cameras-to-apple/

I think this will be Sony IMX105 sensor. This IMX105 matches the exact specs as for 4S. It's effective 8.13MP, 1/3.2 inch sensor, F2.4, BSI (back-illuminated CMOS). Same 1080-30P / 720-30P video capability. This is the same sensor used in SE Arc and one of the sensors used in GS2 (GS2 uses 2 different sensors - other from Samsung itself).

I believe the GS2 and 4S quality in camera won't be much different. 4S has bigger aperture than both GS2 and N8. N8 has F stop value of 2.8 and GS2 has 2.65 (or 2.7 as some Exif data shows) against 4S's 2.4, which is considered to be the next half-stop. Though there are few other mobile cameras now with bigger aperture. N9 uses 2.2 and HTC Amaze also uses same stop value.

N8 has a huge (no it's HUGE) advantage over any other phone (4S, GS2 all included). It has a mammoth sensor for a mobile phone. 1/1.83 inch is about 75% more than 4S/GS2/Arc sensor size. This is evident when you check the photos at 100% crop.

Another major advantage for N8 is the xenon flash. LED flash is ok, but xenon is a totally different beast. LED flash is simply no match for xenon. You can't use it as a "light" though. But nothing trumps a xenon.

I can say from my experience that GS2 LED throws about 80 (+/-20) lumens. This is the brightest I have seen in a camera (obviously except xenon in N8). Yet to get any details for 4S. But I can say (as would anyone else), when you compare a LED against a xenon, there is no contest.

I was looking to get at least a t2i do some light video recording, and I'm thrilled that the 4S looks like a worthy camera for the mean time until I can get that t2i :D

Yeah the iPhone 4 video looks better.

Kind of. There is a black level problem with the 4S. However, note that the sky is better exposed in the 4S whereas it's blown out in the 4. Hard to compare two auto-exposing cameras that are moving around though as things will be changing constantly. One camera or the other may certainly perform better under certain scenarios (for example, maybe the 4S biases towards highlight preservation...dunno).

We don't know which lens was used and the T!i from Canon is over 2 years old. I'm still impressed by the iPhone 4s, but my 5D Mark ii videos will mop the floor with the 4s.

The fact that it's even close is pretty amazing

Yeah, my old SE K810i had a xenon flash... Awesome flash. SE also used to sell a more powerful xenon flash accessory. If Apple made that as well it would make a killer P&S in your phone for sure.

What about this... Sounds like the perfect accessory.

The 4S isn't so much stabilizing the footage as it is correcting for the slow read out of the CMOS chip.

I'd wager it is probably doing something similar to how the The Foundry plugin works.. but adjusting the image for the rolling shutter and trying to compensate.

Less jello vision is certainly nice though..

I thought iPhone 4S uses the gyro to stabilize.

Here's my first 4S video with an external lavaliere mic:

I've tested all the external mics I have with the iPhone 4S (see my page on using external mics and audio inputs with the iPhone 4S/etc for more info), including the iRig Mic, Fostex AR-4i (stereo), mics with KVConnection adapters, etc. They all work flawlessly!

I really think this model is going to move even more mobile video aficionados over to the iPhone instead of dedicated video cameras. Especially with apps like Filmic Pro...

[Additional info: For comparison, here's a D7000 video at 1080p (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dASwIjhc9O4), and you can see the quality of a really nice lens (35mm f/1.8) on a quality dSLR. With the right lighting, though, the iPhone 4S is almost indistinguishable.]

Uggh... There are lots of people uploading iPhone 4S videos on Youtube but some of them really don't know what they are doing. A number of them are being shot in the vertical position (instead of sideways).

Does the iPhone 4S allow you to choose between video resolutions, or is it only 1080p? Can you turn hardware stabilization on and off?

Can you post a screenshot of the video settings screen on the iPhone 4S?

There are no settings to speak of. 1080p or nothing in the Camera app, can't turn stabilization on or off.

You can do some things in Filmic Pro, but it's currently limited to 720p, and has a few other limitations. I'm sure they'll update it to take advantage of the 4S hardware soon, though.

Is there a 720P, 60FPS mode?

That would be much more important than 1080P.

...because when we're trying to imagine an advantage for 720p like 60fps, we can't imagine the same being applied to 1080p? As in 1080p 60fps?

If this is another 720p is better than 1080p because "good" 720p is better than "bad" 1080p or similar, please note: the BIG change now is that Apple- yes Apple- has officially endorsed 1080p in an Apple product. I know historically 1080p had to be a terrible choice because Apple seemed to strongly favor 720p in all things... but that's over now. Apple is driving the train that has left that station. Expect more 1080p-capable Apple products to follow soon.

If you personally love 720p, this will let you shoot video at a higher resolution and then you can edit it (down convert it from 1920 x 1080 video to 1280 x 720) down to 720p. That will still make it possible for you to get what you love while also allowing those that want the extra resolution to get what they want too.

----------

Anybody seen/know any concrete specs of Apple's choices for the 1080p file?

Mbps?
frame rate?
Etc.

What technical tradeoffs- if any- has Apple chosen for it's incarnation of 1080p?

Finally got my 4S, Verizon activation is still horked, but shot some test video and pics in a dark-ish coffee shop. All I can say is WOW. The quality just blows me away. It handles low-ish light levels really well. Very little noise.

The larger picture is I just can't believe all the things that are possible with this hunk of metal and glass that's the size of a deck of cards and is always in your pocket. "Magical" might be a bit extreme, but damn, it's pretty close.
