One year later and Apple never fixed the thermal issues with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The device just gets too hot when you put it under any type of exertion and it makes it unusable. This has been my favorite design of the Max models of phone, but it is an abject failure in how the phone performs under pressure. This type of scenario happens to me often. Yesterday, I get on a teams call on my phone. 15 minutes into the call my phone gets too hot and the temperature gauge screen comes on telling me my phone has gotten too hot. It's incredibly frustrating and Apple a year in never figured out how to fix it, or maybe it just can't be fixed.

The heat has also crushed my battery health. This is the first time I've ever come up on a year of owning an iPhone that my battery capacity is below 99%. I'm already at 89% after 1 year. I've taken it to Apple to have it looked at and each time they tell me nothing is the matter with it. I still love the phone and will no doubt by the 16, but this one has been a complete bust for me and I hope Apple moving forward does a better job with managing the thermals of their phones.

Unsure if they could without throttling the phone and we all know people lost their minds about that type of thing before. Not to say that it’s right in anyway and no idea how this didn’t flag on any stress test but only so much you can do at this point if you’re Apple.

Surprisingly, I haven’t heard it become a huge issue and only now some YouTubers are talking about it with the new 16 inbound as what they would like to see fixed.

Admittedly I haven't said anything about it either on here. I've been to Apple twice and they told me its just how the phone operates and that too much stress on it will cause it to heat up. I get that, but it shouldn't get so hot that it becomes unusable to the point where Apple locks the phone up. Now that the 16 is coming soon I really hope they've fixed the issues with it.

I suspect it could be related to specific apps you use and the temperature at your location.

You mentioned MS Teams but does it happen in other apps, when just browsing the web or on a regular phone call?

Also if you’re outside in a warmer area in direct sunlight that’s a huge factor. Not only does the phone have to increase brightness, but the sunlight will heat it up.

Also, are you charging the phone while using it? Charging will increase the temperature and especially if it’s wireless charging.

This is why you might say it’s terrible because it shuts down all the time but someone else will say they don’t have any problems. The other person might be using the phone completely different than how you’re using it. I’m not saying Apple shouldn’t make it better for different use cases, but it could cause you to have a different experience than someone else.

The conspiracy theory goes as follows:

The new 3nm TSMC chip in the iPhone 15PM is suspect. TSMC was experiencing a higher than usual reject rate on that new node and it’s likely some marginal chips got through.
This would explain why some people say “my iPhone never gets hot” while some others get scorched hands.

I returned my ip15PM soon after I got it because it ran way too hot compared to all my previous iPhones

Never had overheating issues with my 15 pro. Lately decided to go without an apple silicon case and to my surprise, this thing gets hot out of the blue during the day with just safari and instagram.

Then i put the case back and it feels cool again.

Long story short: thick apple silicon case has is a necessity and people going naked are prone to notice it more than cased people.

I feel like my 15PM only gets hot when charging or when I’m trying to use it outside and it’s 90°F or hotter (32°C+).

What was the ambient temperature when it displayed that message?

Yeah I never use a case. Mine gets so hot though the temperature warning comes on.

Only time I've had my 15 Pro overheat is when I was playing Pokemon Go outside in 95F weather for like 2 hours.

Sounds like the teams app is garbage.

I've only had an issue with my 15PM overheating when it was hanging on a windshield mount during a 117 degree day in Phoenix using maps and streaming music while charging. That was the only time I've seen the "allow your iPhone to cool off" notification.. I haven't seen the warning again since I stopped using the windshield mount during the summer

Does it only happen with Teams? I know you are quick to blame the design, but let's rule out that the problem is not Microsoft first. Do you do any Zoom or FaceTime calls and have similar issues? If it is just Teams, contact their support and let them know their iOS app has some issues.

Also, short-term maybe-fix, do you need to be on camera for the call?

No it also happens when filming for longer stretches, playing graphic intense games, as well as facetime. I'm not bashing the phone by any means as this has been my favorite design but my phone gets hotter than hell if I do more than just browse safari, send emails, or take photos.

we are heading in the right direction. I remember in the past, the case would become hot as well. Currently the case can help to hide the hot phone, so probably the next phone will be cooler.

Currently the phone also heats up from my hand and overall runs very warm on a day to day basis. Though it happens in bursts, so not always, but maybe 3-4 times a day.

mine gets warm enough that i will put it down in some situations, for example when downloading a bunch of app updates from the app store or taking a string of photos.

I had to remove teams from my phone. I just hope Microsoft moves away from the electron crap. Something happens on mac, in a browser.
