not too sure about how many people would upgrade their tv/receiver to make it all work anyway. Cant use anything bought recently and I think there's only a few 2.1 tv's out there not sure about receivers yet. You'd have to go from the appletv to the tv but then have that pass out the audio to the receiver I guess.

eArc sorts that problem with 2.1 buddy. The LG OLED TVs have 2.1 and I guess that all at the CES in January will carry it too :) It's a big deal and quite a game changer :) Now if only iTunes carried Dolby True HD.

It seems Geekbench has the GPU of the A13 similar to the A10X, which is decent jump for non-X variants.
They could put a A13 and tout the increased CPU performance and sustained GPU performance, which I'd be surprised if any game was really utilizing.
The mass production of the A13 for iPhones, would also help to offset costs one would think rather than producing X variants.

Of course, I'd prefer an increase across the board with an A12X, however, I would happily take an standard A13.

I'd like to see them go all in with an A13X and some realistic storage options, or better still, just include a micro SD slot. I have 400Gb in my Switch as micro SD cards are so cheap now. If they're serious about gaming now (a big if I realise), then 256gb of storage is an absolute minimum.

There's so much they could do with this box which they currently aren't, such as giving it a decent backlit remote with touch ID, including the microphone array from the Homepod for always on Hey Siri, adding HLG, AV1, and VP9, increasing the system RAM to 8gb, designing an Apple game controller (just don't make it as thin as a sheet of paper), making Siri as capable as it is on iOS (and with a voice), and adding HDMI 2.1 with audio pass through and support for Dolby True HD.

I guess that really would be an incredible performing Apple TV with a A13X chip AND HDMI 2.1 :)

Knowing nothing about gaming, I'm not sure how the Apple TV stands BUT what I do know is that gaming friends of mine fall into two categories 1. PC gamers with 144hz monitors AND 2. PS4 / Xbox users. I notice that the 2020 PS5 specs have just been announced and it'll include a 4K BluRay player in it.

My perfect ATV dream would be to have Dolby True HD audio for movie bought from iTunes :) - then it would be perfect. As far as i'm concerned, iTunes picture quality is as perfect as I would hope for but the sound is not too great on my ears.

A12x, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, 128 gb and I will finally purchase another Apple TV. I have been using a FireStick4k at home and an Apple TV3 at work.

Why more storage? Does anything beyond the screensaver videos ever really get downloaded to the Apple TV? I have two (Apple TV 4K and Apple TV) and for the life of me I couldn't tell you how having the maximum amount of storage has ever helped. :)
I went with the 32GB model for the 4K after going for the 64GB model for the 4 - as I never even got close to 32GB. Since then however two things have happened: Apps are no longer size limited and forced to use "app streaming" and Apple Arcade being released with games taking full advantage of that. Oceanhorn 2 is close to 3GB.

Imagine my shock when I suddenly couldn't update my ATV. No descriptive error, just an "Apple TV Update failed". Tried enrolling in the beta program again - with the same error. Only after two weeks and some other strange behaviour (apps not updating), did it dawn on me to check the space usage. Turns out I had hit the limit and the ATV not informing you of this other than the aforementioned strange behaviour shows that this hasn't really even been a consideration up until now.

Next gen I'd definitely splurge for the extra storage.

If the were going to have an even this month, would we have already heard about it by now?

I want an A13 ATV however note even with an a12 the ATV is not subject to the same power / battery constraints and thermal issues that the phones are.

I understand what you are saying, and it makes sense.

But, the same could be said about the A10X that is currently in the ATV4K.

Comparing mobile A10X to mobile A12, there isn't really a big difference between them, especially GPU wise. I have no experience with this myself, but I have seen developers post about this, and said that in real world testing (not just benchmarks), the A10X actually out performs the A12 when it comes to graphic performance.

So, with all the rumors of the new ATV having a A12 versus A12X or better, people have concerns that it will not be much of an upgrade.

I have mentioned on another thread that I think the reason Apple would switch to a A12 versus keeping the A10X is because of economies of scale. There isn't any Apple devices that is currently sold that still uses the A10X anymore, except the ATV4K.

But, there are plenty of devices that use an A12.

First off, there is no more iTunes(on a Mac anyways) and also, I already own the 4K bluray for the new Lion king so I have no idea what the author of that article is even talking about when he refers to it coming out on Tuesday.

I think the comparison would be the A10X apple tv 4k vs an A10X ipad. I do hope though that they put in the baddest fastest chip they have anyway :) Anandtech really likes the A13 GPU.
