If it's the same A12 + (pseudo) 3 GB DRAM setup as in the XR, then it's NOT a true 3 GB DRAM device !

Specifically, the XR does NOT act like a true 3 GB DRAM device ! ... that has been proven !

However, many won't notice the issue since neither the new 10.5" Air or 7.9" mini include a 12 Mpx image sensor ... specifically here, for those who don't know, a sufficient amount of DRAM is required when capturing Full-Res 12 Mpx photos ... this is where most will notice the Diff between 2 GB vs 3 GB vs 4 GB.

Both of the new iPads include the same set of cameras, 8 Mpx on the Back, & 7 Mpx on the Front ... so, 3 GB is ok with both.

I believe AAPL learned from their XR mistake.

The XR would have been fine with 4 GB of DRAM, but is a Dog / Performance Lemon with it's current (pseudo) 3 GB DRAM setup.

Few in the General Public know this.

People needs to ignore this. ( Or Him / Her Even )
Below is what he posted after

There is a Performance Controller bug in at least the A12 in the XR.

That's been proven.

Hopefully, the new iPads don't get the exact same A12 !

For those of you who don't know, the Performance Controller is basically "the Scheduler" for work on the various processor cores.

Earlier versions of AAPL's processors had simpler Performance Controller designs that do NOT have the problem.

For example, the A10 in the 7+ runs like an absolute Gem of an iPhone.

The XR runs like a Performance Lemon.

There is ONE benchmark out there that enables anyone to test any currently available iPhone or iPad.

Very specifically, it appears the Synthetic Benchmarks are NOT testing the switching capabilities of processors ... in AAPL's case, what they call the Performance Controller.

Performance Controller? Switching? Scheduler?

Wow. Tell me more about it. Or in specific terms, is not like we don't have CPU expert in the forum. Or you know those aren't even the terms we use. And even if it did, what does that have to do with memory? And specifically (pseudo ) memory.

Here in the UK a new iPad Air 256 gb will cost £630 when available next week.

An iPad Pro 2017 with the same capacity, immaculately refurbished by Apple and indistinguishable from new, has just cost me £540.

Given everything that has been said in this and other forums, the price difference makes the iPad Pro a good buy. But I will have the opportunity to compare directly with the iPad Air 2019, which I can still purchase in place of the Pro (which I can return within 14 days), if I think the Air justifies the extra cost.
[doublepost=1553813693][/doublepost]I should say that (like EugW) I was impressed by the quality of the refurbish - packaging is superb, with new cables etc in the box, and you really can't tell that it is not brand new (looks as though screen and casework may have been replaced).

Hey where can I find technical write ups on this pseudo-3gb ram setup?
I think this is still true for the new iPad Air since Teoh of Parkablogs did a review and found out the max layers you can create in Procreate is the same as the 2018 iPad which has 2gb of ram. Which is a bummer :(

He got 26 layers with 4 GB RAM, but that was with the 3rd generation Pro. It will be interesting to see what it would be on the 10.5” Pro.

3rd gen iPad Pro (11" & 12.9") should have the same max layer as 10.5 iPad Pro since they have the same RAM configuration. Except the max storage configuration which has 6 gb of ram

Btw my point is 2019 iPad air (3gb ram) has the same max layer as 2018 iPad (2gb ram) on procreate and that's a bit worrying. Let's hope it's not pseudo ram and procreate just hasn't updated to take advantage of odd numbered ram configuration

? Why would you believe it's fake RAM? The RAM is real.

I suspect Procreate just needs updating, since the first 3 GB iPads only landed last month (mini and Air).

As for the 10.5" Pro's number of layers, I was thinking it would be same but I just was wondering if someone has confirmed that.

What is pseudo RAM? Never heard of it, sounds like someone’s breaking some major news ;)

Because it behaves like a 2gb ram devices. Btw yeah let's wait if procreate updated

yeah that's what I wanted to know. Idk what's the correct technical term but since someone here called it that I just go along. Not saying it's definitely configured like A12 inside iPhones but the behaviour seem to indicate so. Hence I said "let's just hope this is procreate hasn't updated their app to accommodate 3gb RAM of 2019 iPads" or so

Sounds like pseudo “news” from a pseudo-“tech” YouTuber who likely has near zero actual technical knowledge

I'm not rich but need a new iPad for paid gigs. Can't afford 2018 iPad pros. Having real usable 3gb RAM or not will be the main factor me to decide between this or a refurbished 10.5 iPad Pro. I can live with slightly less maximum layers in procreate but not 1/3rd less vs 4gb iPads.

It's not presented as so. He just shown maximum layers for both devices in Procreate and hasn't made a big deal about it. Read my post above why this is important for me tho

I wasn’t specifically referring to that tech-tuber but I can see why you may have thought so. Why not contact Savage directly and ask about the max layers? I’m sure they’d be glad to answer.

Actually I did but haven't heard anything back from them yet. I guess I'll just wait for now

This is good news for you iPhone XR owners. The more people that have current devices with 3GB ram in circulation, the more devs will target apps with that in mind as the lowest common denominator. Seeing as how iPad owners hold onto their devices for a very long time, this is good for longevity overall.

EDIT: Now I see why updates to the 11 iPad Pro sizes is so slow. Half of iPad owners are still on the A7/A8 devices.

I'm part of that 1% :D not exactly the best 1% though. :(
