A friend handed me an A1278 (13.3" MBP, 2008) that was completely dead and wouldn't charge. I reset the SMC, so now the battery's charged, and it (kind of) boots, but...
After a longish Apple/spinning-wheel screen, the display goes bright blue, then dim blue, then black. The machine goes to sleep shortly thereafter. I did notice the ghost of a "wireless networks found" notice once, in the darkness.
I HAVE managed to boot it into Hardware Test mode, which tells me "no problems found"the screen stays lit for the duration, but it wouldn't recognize trackpad input, so I couldn't tick the "deep scan" option.
I've also popped the HDD out and booted my battered A1181 from it, no problem. Disk Utility found no volume problems and repaired a few permissions. I've checked the Energy Saver settings this way, and I've run it through both DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro as an external HDD to rebuild the directories and optimize file structures.
Still, no luck. Apple/spinning wheel, two shades of blue, then darkness and sleep.
Any pointers? If the logic board is bad, why does the Apple Hardware Test work at all, and subsequently tell me everything's fine?
