Pot, meet kettle?

PickUrPoison seems convinced that the iPad Pro 2020 having an A12Z isn't a big problem, and you seem convinced that it is. 🤷‍♂️

I know, it’s just incomprehensible to understand that after waiting nearly two years for the new iPad Pro to be updated that instead of using current hardware architecture, we’re getting a mediocre spec bump. Why on earth would anyone be irked by this? The fact that people are content with being bent over by Apple is unsettling. Enjoy the ankle grabbing, I guess.

Is there something your current ipad is not doing that you think the new ipad with a minor spec bump to the A13X instead of the A12X will do better?

Why would someone be irked by "a mediocre spec bump"? I can see why.

Why would someone be irked by "a mediocre spec bump on already really good specs"? I can see that a lot less.

You didn't really answer this: "Is there something your current ipad is not doing that you think the new ipad with a minor spec bump to the A13X instead of the A12X will do better?"

What is it the 2018 iPad Pro can't do that it could if the CPU were slightly faster?

If the new one doesn’t perform noticeably better than the old one, then this is a problem. Not seeing this as a problem is your issue, not mine. Just because the old one is “gods enough” doesn’t justify anything. Lots of things are “good enough”, but that isn’t the point here. Good grief.

You're really a great communicator. I appreciate the non-condescending open-minded back-and-forth we just shared. I hope we can do this again sometime.

I mean, do feel free to try an answer at the question: what does a hypothetical A13X iPad Pro let you do that the A12Z iPad Pro doesn't?

It's only been asked multiple times, so maybe you've missed it.

You want an iPad Pro with A13X instead of A12Z. Why? What is the value of that? What would have been the relative value of an SoC we didn’t get, compared to the value of all the upgrades that we did get?

Some people keep saying the next model (2021) is going to be the one to get. But the only upgrade we might see is A14X—nothing else.

I can only imagine the bitching and moaning there will be here if that’s what comes to pass. No additional camera. No new LiDAR sensor. No increase in WiFi speeds. No RAM bump. No base storage bump. No across the board price decreases. Nothing like the feature upgrades we just got—which wasn’t enough for some.

But you’ll get an A14X 🤷‍♂️

At some point, people will realize a one-generation CPU upgrade is no big deal. And that the big upgrade of iPad was last month’s 3rd gen to 4th, not next year’s 4th to 5th.

it is a big deal on a device that costs a small fortune and already has 1.5 of its 5-6 years of os support used up when it’s brand new.

You could spend >$1000 on a device that needs to be replaced as early as 2023, and at best as late as 2024. That ain’t great.

I’m not ready to buy a new iPad yet, but certainly expect a current gen cpu in the high end model. If the $320 one lagged a year behind, okay-ish. I was watching this as I probably will need to replace my air 2 this year

Apple TV is super out of date too,and I need a streaming box.

I don’t actually get how Apple justifies killing off piles of iOS devices running ANYTHING along with 2GB, but the rumor is they’re killing the air 2 this Year, and presumably everything with an A9 next year, and then A10 the year after. And they’re still shipping piles of gear with 2GB!

It's… it's not? I don't really follow that train of thought. Like, yeah, you're probably looking at replacing your iPad Pro every ~four years. That's already been true for laptops, too.

well IMO that’s insane to be replacing anything that often, especially something so expensive.

it’s gross if these are just disposable.

It's actually less than 1.5 years.

The simple reality is that there never was an A13x chip, because that would have required Apple to dedicate resources to specifically create it.

So you were left with either the A13 or A12Z chip and by all measure, the A12Z chip still performs better than the A13 chip.

It is what it is.

There was no need to release this product then.

I guess "need" is a very debatable term. The thing about Apple announcements and product releases is about how Apple is setting the stage for the future. Certain announcements and features make much more sense when thinking about what Apple will likely unveil the following year.

There was speculation about Apple wanting to get an iOS device with a Lidar sensor out in time for WWDC so developers could test AR apps. That all iPad Pro models come with 6gb ram standard is likely no coincidence as well. You also want to build up a critical mass of iPad Pro users who can help developers test their AR apps as well.

I suppose for people who are in the market for an iPad Pro today, having a slightly-updated iPad is still better than resorting to buying a 1.5-year old model, especially since not everyone is in a position to shop for refurbished stock. Performance remains great, you get 6gb of ram, better microphones (for whatever it's worth), and a dual-lens camera. And if you are able to find a refurbished 2018 iPad Pro model, then it's price just went down a little more. So everybody wins.

The next major iPad refresh is rumoured to be early next year. Maybe Apple felt that 2.5 years was simply too long to go without an iPad update, and this is what you get.

I guess I kinda understand why Apple chose to release the 2020 iPad Pro when they did, the way they did?
