Unfortunately, the Samsung, Asus, or Dell alternative displays only have a non-competitive matt display and no glossy display. That's why the Apple Studio Display has this outstanding picture!

That... and its stability regarding color/brightness/contrast being solid over time. I set it up once when I received mine a couple years ago. And there's been zero drift since. When processing photos in Lightroom, what I see on the screen is what comes out of my printer. My previous non-Apple display required periodic calibration tweaking, resulting in wasted prints and ink.

Presumably that would have the compute to demolish any Intel Mac ever made at nearly every task. But it will just sit there tantalizing you and you'll have to pay at least $600 to get it to work as a computer.

so they're allegedly releasing a MacBook with A18 Pro but at the same time they're allegedly releasing A MONITOR with faster SOC?
Why would a monitor need that powerful SOC? Will it run TVOS? Even Apple TV is supposed to have older and slower chip lol

Could be it makes more financial sense to use a current chip that's used in other Apple devices, rather than a chip fabbed in an older process.

Everyone keeps making pictures of a screen slapped on a HomePod or ATV... but this? Hello. This IS that if they want it to be. Heck it has a better chip in it than the rumors for the new ATV!

They can work on Windows and Linux machines that support Thunderbolt but only on a very rudimentary level. Things like Center Stage, certain audio functions, and other software-derived features won't work, but the display and webcam itself would.

You'd be better off with better supported display like the ones from Samsung, Asus, or Dell.
So, how does that work? Most GPUs have Displayport and/or HDMI outputs. Is there a way to convert that to Thunderbolt?

If this isn’t the XDR doing some massive amount of work with the A19 it would be really swell if they included the ability to automatically leverage the NPU via thunderbolt e.g. when not doing facetime calls or using the webcam. Such a waste just sitting there for those of us that could use the compute.

Maybe this will also function as an Apple TV? The rumored chip in the next Apple TV is the A17, so it's more powerful than that.

I am most concerned about the existence of a Studio Display 2 eventually resulting in the Studio Display 1 being rendered obsolete by Apple. I bought a Studio Display on the operating theory that I would be able to use it until it failed - at least a decade into ownership, if not more. The entire idea of a monitor requiring a computer processor and operating system gives me pause.

nope, as thunderbolt - despite sharing the type-c connector - is an absolutey different protocol

My two ASDs are the best monitors I’ve owned. I’m excited to see what a V2 would bring. Ideally I’d like a 32-inch variant that costs less than the Pro Display XDR.
Now imagine if it had pro motion and mini led too, it'd be absolute perfection. And it would also be good enough to use for at least a decade.

It will probably be able to function as a computer but not independently but tied to a Mac. The A19Pro processors will be those of efficiency besides the performance of Mac. Whether or not MACs will have efficiency CPU. Maybe they will be Mac CPU options that will only have performance CPU. And look how, in this case you will want to mate a Sudio Mac with Apple Studio V2 and not with another monitor. In addition through these Apple Studio processors will have a tailor -made price.

I wouldn't complain about those improvements, but I don't know I'd upgrade for them either. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be 32" 6K and under $2k (probably be at least $2.5k - since Apple stuff always costs that bit more than you want to pay...)

The nice thing about the ASD is that they hold their value. I bought one new and one used. I paid $1,000 for the used one and prices still bounce between about $900-1,200 on places like FB Marketplace and Craigslist. If they come out with a new one, I'd be able to sell the current ones for at least $800. I don't know of many competing monitors that I could do that with.

I have a theory, the headline feature will be the ability to stream 5k 60hz via airplay standalone, and the entire throughput of a19 pro will be used for that instead of iPadOS or macOS functionality. at best we get tvOS

Expecting it to be launched some time during the first half of next year. Don't mind the screen size increasing a bit as long as the price is not going to skyrocket.

This probably has something to do with their HomeOS. Perhaps the new monitor will work as a HomeHub as well and support future AI features. Probably will have as much RAM as the iPhone. It would be pretty sweet if it was touchscreen so it can be used as a standalone device when not being used as a monitor.
