I am on A1984 model which is actually TMobile MT2E2LL/A and purchased it off an online store locally in UAE. Box came with a TMobile SIM card in it. Worked without any problem with my local number as an eSim as well as a hardware SIM card. I did a bit of research on it and here is what I found: you can buy the unit off Apple’s US website and you have the option to pay in full but you need to choose your carrier regardless, when you pay in full, they configure it as unlocked and that unit should work internationally. Would be great if someone can correct/confirm this.

Also, is there a way to know for sure that the unit is unlocked? Thanks.

Yes. It is unlocked as long as you buy it from apple store paying full and doing the activation yourself.

I did it myself on the A1984 coral Xr from apple store. I chose the verizon version to stay at the safe side. However, apple csr assured me that any carrier version of Xr, Xs, Xs max is unlocked with the carrier sims. When I got home, I threw the verizon sim away and activated it on t-mobile just fine.

Yours is just the same as my Xr with different sim. The model number is just for stocking purposes.

Of course, the sim free version is now available for both Xr and Xs, so there is no need to buy a carrier version anymore.

Thanks for your comment. Kinda settles me down now. :)
