I think it's ridiculous having a "low cost" iPad mini. Isn't the iPad mini meant to be a low cost iPad in itself? Can't see this happening. Excited to see Retina is on the table for iPad mini 2 though. Lots of people saying it's not possible.

For those of you dissing old Kuo, here is his road map from JANUARY this year. It looks like he got a fair bit right. I'd definitely give the guy a pass based on how long ago he predicted this.

*confused*
I've heard a LOT of haters make a lot of really stupid Apple jokes, but this is the first time I've heard ANYBODY take a jab at their battery technology... You know they pretty much set the industry standard, right??

I was under the impression the Apple rechargeable batteries are just rebranded SANYO ENELOOPs. Anybody care to correct me?

No.

Apple is REALLY trying to be competitive in the lower-priced market (hence, 5C). I would make a gentleman's wager that they do NOT raise the price of the mini, when it is already the most expensive tablet in that size category.

Agreed. In fact, I've held a theory since the Mini was released that $329 was the target price needed for the retina version (whenever it comes out) and not necessarily the existing 1st gen.

Apple doesn't like raising prices, so early adopters of the Mini have actually been paying a higher price than it would have been if Apple didn't need to consider its future development and associated marketing.

As the iPad 3 didn't increase in price when it went retina, neither will the Mini. :)

I think it's ridiculous that Apple was almost the first to market with the iPad and similarly with retina screens on the iPhone, yet it now plays catchup each and every year.

Wish they'd bring back the innovation and stop waiting to see what everyone else is doing!

What in god's name are you talking about?

I still have no iPad... can you believe this?

Yes, I don't have one too. I'm thinking getting one this year, if the storage starts at 32GB probably I will get one. 610€ (almost 800usd) for 32GB model is a bit of a ripoff. Why they charge 100€ for something that costs a 4~8 USD?

Even spending 500€ (assuming that the base model will be 32GB) will be a heck of a decision. Being a student with 0 income is not smart to spend money on a little toy.

You are indeed correct! I was referring to their batteries in mobile devices. Lol, yes.. I am aware that Apple doesn't manufacture their own double a batteries! =P

To be fair... that is a much higher price point product... & they decided to spin it off into its own category w/ solid state and other upgrades. They did NOT simply add a higher res screen, then raise the price.

Here's what I think will happen:

Ipad mini refresh in COLORS, no retina, with a6 processor and 1gb ram, 16/32/64 launched at iPhone event. Price starting $299-329

Ipad 5 with new form factor, a7, 2gb ram, white/black/champagne 32/64/128 launched at late fall event (nov?), along with refreshed MacBook Pros, iMacs, and the new Mac Pro, + Mavericks official release. And one last thing: Apple TV 4 with apps, voice and maybe motion control (starting at 149-199 for 16gb), all just in time for the Christmas rush.

Ipad mini with retina display, a7 (scaled down for better battery life), 1gb white/black/champagne 32/64/128, starting at 329-399 (they will make us pay for that retina because they know how many people will have to have it!)
Launched spring 2014, izgo display, possibly minor form factor change.

Big question is what is going to happen to iPods. Their sales have dropped off dramatically. I suspect the iPhone 5c will render the touch almost redundant. They will scale back the price a bit as they move to discontinue. The classic will be discontinued. The iwatch will pick up the slack sometime in the spring or early summer, while the smaller iPods will be kept in place for the exercise and music playback enthusiasts and their big selling point will be streaming iTunes radio and continued standard iTunes functionality.

Back to schoolers were on a budget, and what better time to clear out as much old stock at the educational price. Christmas is when people are more likely to splurge for new products I think.

No.

For heaven's sake.... You are currently ON MacRumors.. you should know that if a colored iPad were going to show up in 5 days, somebody would have seen it being manufactured at the factory.
Some of your other product guesses are feasible, but there is NO chance they will all be introduced at the same event. I think we have 3 total unveilings before year end.....

I would doubt the A7X being in the iPad mini. The only spec difference other than screen size between the full-size iPad and the mini would be ram, unless they bumped storage on the larger iPad without increasing cost. Otherwise there wouldnt be much to justify the price difference between the two.

My guess is that Apple is looking to differentiate on battery life, as seen with the improvements with the MacBook Air and the work in Mavericks to further increase battery life. They've been trying to work on battery life for a full fledged iOS device in the rumoured iWatch, and perhaps the iPad mini and iPad will reap the benefits first in the form of the A7 which is said to have a much smaller performance increase over previous generations. I wonder if the real USP of the A7 is power consumption, which would allow the smaller battery in the mini to support a retina display and still have great battery life, as well as giving the iPad a battery life that's more impressive than it currently has.

Actually, a LOT of college students are using iPads instead of notebook computers. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it as "a little toy".

----------

my guess is

ipad 5 - $499
ipad mini retina - $399
ipad mini - $299

future ipad pro 13" - $699

I say same...
Except- iPad mini Retina stays @ current $329 & current mini drops to $249-$279

it's difficult. Apple already said the ipad mini is their lowest margin product they produce. ipad mini's didn't all of a sudden get that much easier to produce over the past year.

Yeah time to stop listening to Kuo now.

"KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a fairly solid track record in predicting Apple's product plans"

It's similar to how psychics operate. They make a prediction and if they're right one time, everyone forgets they were wrong a dozen times before and then everyone says that they're the best and know everything, when in fact, they're just predicting like the rest of us.

Solid track record my ass.

so basically the iPad 5 will come in two sizes, and with otherwise identical specs...
So now why would anyone pay $150 more for 1 extra inch of screen space??
I smell a massive price increase in the ipad mini2....or a price cut in the big size ipad.

----------

i believe if you look at his past track record, hes been very accurate.

I believe if you look HARDER at his past records, his analysis has merely been random guesses that could changed and go wrong most of the time.

They're only get a bit more accurate when the real deal is approaching. But then everyone else also get the same news.

In short, nothing special about Ming's analysis.

If these rumours about cheaper ipad are true then Apple is starting to do what it did once without Steve Jobs: introducing confusing variations of the same product. Lower priced, higher priced, Mac Performa, Mac Centris, Mac Quadra and whatever else. It's wrong. When Jobs came back in 1997 he slashed everything to just 4 models: iMac, Power Mac, iBook and PowerBook. There can't be iPhone Pro or iPad Pro, so there should be only one iPhone (exc previous models) and only one iPad. We have yet to see the result of introducing iPhone 5C.

So, the ipad mini 2 now will have the same A7X like ipad 5 ? so the only differences between them is the screen size?

Well....... IF you believe this guy's theory. Looks like most of us so far DO NOT.

I disagree. I feel it is needed to keep pace with Android. Keep most everything in the iPhone/iPad the same... offer a bunch of screen sizes to fit people's needs/tastes/preferences. Sounds like a winning (and non-confusing) idea to me!

If we're to believe him, Apple had no plans to release a retina mini this year but within the past month or two (or since his last prediction) did an 180 and are now going to release one? What??
First, iPad mini was targeted for early summer, then it was Sept-Nov, then Spring of 2014 and now it is slated for the Fall again. It was supposed to have A6, but now A7X. The production issues were supposedly what delayed the iPhone launch, yet it is getting released 3 months after first iOS developer previews and in mid September, same as last year. A casual observer might think this is all deliberate timing or pattern, but of course Kuo assures that it was the production issues.

In the meantime, his prediction for an iMac refresh in August has not come to pass, but there is still time for his Haswell Macbook Pro with retina prediction for mid-Sept. It is fairly easy to assume that Apple is unlikely to launch new Macbooks without an event and that it would not hold one just a week after the iPhone announcement and a week before the actual launch, so I doubt this will prove Kuo right, either.

I have no doubt he has more industry sources than I do, but his track record is no better than mine.

Of course tha is brading diluiton.
Sony is expert in that field, they have so many of products with confusing names and numbers even some change between contries

Kuo believes that Apple had initially intended to launch the Retina iPad mini in early 2014, but that the company has accelerated development in part to remain competitive with other small high-resolution tablets hitting the market.
This doesn't sound like Apple. Would I buy a small android tablet, because the iPad mini has no high-resolution screen? Of course not! Apple knows that, everybody knows that, why don't analysts know that?

I would wait till the inevitable iPad mini with Retina display arrives. Early 2014 or Late 2013 doesn't make a difference. I was ready to wait at least three generations for this to happen. If it comes out before christmas, I could pretend its to be praising the birth of our savior. But no one would believe me, since I'm the atheist antichrist.

In no way an Apple customer would switch platforms, because of three more months of waiting time. I'm waiting here for the Retina version since the very first rumors of an smaller iPad surfaced. When no one knew if it be called the iPad Mini? or iPad Air? I'm also already waiting for the 4K iMac without knowing his proper name.

Man literally everybody is spewing Apple rumors now.

Tis the season ;) At this point these predictions are conservative. Essentially Kuo is saying there will be iterations of current products. It would be more surprising if these were not the predictions.

iPad Mini is a new "line"?

At first, I doubted that Apple would release a Retina screen–equipped iPad mini with the same chip as the new full-size iPad. I guess that's because many of us think of the iPad mini as "subordinate" to the bigger iPad.

But what if Apple's thoughts on that have changed? What if the iPad mini will be getting its own "product tree" [please excuse the amateur terms]?

Right now, there's a Retina version and a non-Retina version of the full-size iPad. The same could happen to the iPad mini; i.e., the Retina version of the iPad mini would be the top-of-the-line model for the mini line, justifying the top-of-the-line processor too. The non-Retina version would be the low-cost model, with upgraded [but not equal] specs.

What do you guys think?

Might not be that outlandish.

A7 may be needed to secure the battery life. The device won't increase in thickness.

Is it just me or does this rumor make apples lineup way to big and confusing. I miss the days of jobs keeping things simple.

You had an iPod touch, an iPhone, or an iPad.

Now it's mini this, retina that, mini with retina, mini retina Verizon, mini retina pro verizon LTE

Feel like I'm buying an HP or Dell

Ya, I suppose you are right...there was never this many options...well, only if we forget about the iPod nano, the iPod photo, the iPod video, the iPod shuffle, iPod touch, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, newer iPhone, or previous generations for less money...I forgot how simple Apple used to be. Feel free to go back to HP and Dell! They do have better options...like that dell computer that is made of plastic running windows 8! It is so cool how the screen detaches to become a tablet! I think disposable laptops are the way of the future anyway. And out of curiosity how good are Dell and HP phones? If options are what you want to stay away from than you should stick to them!
