Does anyone else appreciate the beautiful irony in the fact that AAPL closed at 80.86 today, the day they released their first Intel machines?

When Apple's stock splits, do you think this is a good time to buy in? How long do you think Apple shares will contunue to rise? I assume some of you are good investors and know what Apple's future outlook is both short term and long term to a lot better extent as compared to my outlook. Thanks for any advice on this.

usually, they will announce the split, stock will go up 5-8% on news of the split, then be flat for a bit.....then it will split. thats when i sell.....most stocks drop right after a split...id say 65% of the time, and when apple split last year it dropped down to 35 (split around 44 i think?).... thats when i bought more shares....and have been buying more and more ever since

when people say a split has no bearing on the value or performance of a stock, they are dead wrong

Sitting at $85.31 I am hoping it goes up.. as I am playing this fantasy stock market game at school, and I won the last round with Apple, and will attempt to do the same again.

It's a lot easier and less stressful to play the stock market with fake money rather than real money... ;)

Anyone mind giving me a quick, simple explanation? :)

Where can I buy Apple stock from? Why is it better to buy when it splits?

Think its gonna keep on going up? Thanks.

(I guess I'm thinking of spending ~£200 on stock.. just a round number)

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Not for me! I get very upset when I choose a stock but don't actually purchase any of it :p

A split doesn't have any bearing on value, by definition. How the stock moves as a result of the split is a complicated issue, with no clear pattern. Generally the announcement of a split is taken by the markets as an expression of confidence by the company and some people may decide to sell afterwards for no particular reason, but these patterns can easily be overwhelmed by other far more significant factors.

Sorry, I meant without the intent to ever purchase stock. ;) Yes, inaction when investing can be frustrating, but as with anything, hindsight is 20/20. ;)

Apple stock is traded on the NAsDAQ you can basically buy through pretty much any broker. I myself have a Sharebuilder account and an Etrade account (free cause of company stock purchases). I see you're in the UK, so i'm not certain how that will work out for you, but a bit of checking with online brokers should let you find that answer pretty quick. If the company is doing well it's usually better to buy after the split because as someone said earlier usually the price does drop a bit and then it starts to go back up again, so you get a bit more for your money. As for when the stock splits, not really sure, i can see where apple might just let it ride up to the 110-115 area and do a 3-1 split or might split sooner at 2-1 but sine we're talking about Stock...anyone remember this article where Michael Dell says Apple should close shop?

Check out the market caps for both companies at close of the market friday...

AAPL close price was 85.5899 Mkt Cap (mil) 72,132.4
Dell close price was 30.58 Mkt Cap (mil) 71,970.7

Gotta love it.

Nice one. But it can't go on like that for the next eight years. I hope our favourite company will stay small, lean and healthy.

And by the way: a split has no bearing on the value or performance of a stock, on the long run. ;)

Yes, and just imagine me getting so worked up on a fake stock market game, how I would be if I had money in the market. I think the major problem with the game is that it starts over after so much time, real investing takes time as stocks go up and down. Anyhow, I have certainly lost this time around. In the real world if I was investing in Apple, when they went back up and split (when ever that would happen, I would just have to wait) I would be making a killing. But of course I don't have 10K laying around to invest.

Shard, that's an awfully nice short you've got. I got out at the top, but didn't have the confidence to short it at that point. Take the money and run!

The greedy side of me is holding out for an even $20/share, but I think I'll see what tomorrow brings and if she starts correcting, I'll follow your advice and just take my money and run. I've been burned before by the markets (multiple times I might add!), so no need to repeat past mistakes!

well, looks like aapl's market cap is again less than dell's. no surprise there.
