The ticker symbol for AT&T is "T" -- try to make some sense of that!
 
I believe in the newspaper aren't the stock quotes in alphabetical order? So maybe this way they could be closer to the top?? That's all I can think of
 
Why is AAPL called AAPL and not APPL or even APLE?

Because that's the NASDAQ listing name chosen by the company when they went public. Could be a "top of the listings" thing too, beginning with two A's.
 
It's true, once upon a time, the newspapers did list stock tables in alphabetical order by ticker symbol, but this certainly didn't make stocks easier to find in the tables.
