Just trying to dee if I can delete some old backups on my Air, when I connect the iPhone Xʀ via a lightning cable it doesn't show in the Finder sidebar like it's meant to...

Any ideas?

Ok this is doing my head in now haha

I have an iPhone, and iPad and a work iPad.

My work iPad connects to my Macbook Air via the Apple own brand lightning cable, and it's stable. Stays connected.

Neither the iPhone nor my personal iPad stay connected using the same cable - they both just connect and disconnect repeatedly every couple of seconds.

But they both charge fine using that same cable when I plug it into a wall socket and they stay charging!

I've cleaned out the lightning ports of both, any ideas.....??

Just created this account to reply to this. My problem is that my iPhone sometimes stays connected. My iPad connects and disconnects every second. is this the problem you are having? When did it start. Hoping it might just be a bug and not a hardware problem on my iMac.

Yeah, disconnects and disconnects every second or two, both the iPad and iPhone do this.

I don’t know when it started exactly as I haven’t connected via the cable for months as I use iCloud backup...

In a way that's good because at least it's not just one person. Started in the last few days. Let's hope this is another Catalina bug.

Yep. My iPad's port is spotless. Now I can't open up finder when my iPad is connected.

After some more investigating: it is worst if I plug my device into my computer via a USB extension lead. 2 ports don't work at all for either my iPad or iPhone but 1 port works for my iPhone but not iPad. Is this similar for you?

I’ve only got two USB ports on my MacBook and both of them have the same problem.
and with you it's only on some devices. Not all? What software version are you iOS devices running. Just want to see if I can find a pattern to explain why this might be. Either iOS or MacOS

Like I say my work iPad connects fine and stays connected m, it’s my personal iPad and iPhone that don’t..

Software is as follows:

iPhone XR: 13.3.1
Personal iPad 5th generation: 13.4.1
Work iPad 6th generation: 13.3.1
Mac: Catalina 10.15.3

Mine:

iPhone 11: 13.3.1 - works
Personal iPad 7th generation: 13.4.1 - doesn't
Other iPad 5th generation: 13.3.1 - doesn't
Mac: Catalina 10.15.3

No idea what this is but our problems seems identical and have occurred at a very similar time. Guess it's just a software bug of, probably, Catalina

Okay I have just proved it is indeed a software problem...

I googled the issue to see if there was any advice out there and I found a page of various things to try...

One thing is force-quitting some USBD process via the Mac's Activity Monitor app. I have no clue what that means BUT... when I do that, while the iPhone is connected, it solves the issue - the phone stays connected and I can finally access it in the Finder sidebar...

But when I disconnect the phone and reconnect it the issue just comes back, until I force quit the USBD thing again.

Will you try it? It's number 6 in this list:

Edit: Okay seems this only works with my iPhone, doesn't seem to work with my iPad...!

I can't try it because I run my operating system from an SSD which is connect via USB to my Mac. I tried all the other ones with no success.

If it is a software problem then I guess we just wait until a patch

We are in the same position then

Oh ok.. as per my edit above this only works with my iPhone, it has no effect with the iPad for some reason.

All very frustrating, Apple stuff is meant to just "work"...!

I will try asking Apple via their Twitter support, will let you know if I get anywhere!

Thanks. Hopefully this can get fixed because not being able to connect devices to a Mac is a pretty big flaw.

Another edit: Okay now it HAS worked on my iPad, I left it a couple minutes disconnecting and reconnecting and then noticed the connection was stable and Finder asked me to "trust" the iPad.

Edit on my end: updated to 13.4.1 on my iPad and now everything works on my iPhone and iPad on all ports. (Erm???). Only thing that doesn't work is connecting a USB extension, which may be a separate problem and just a coincidence this has all happened at the same time. I'll check later to see if everything continues to work.

So you didn’t change anything on your iPhone but it too now works?

I’m just updating my iPhone to 13.4.1... will see if that helps.

God this is fun isn’t it 🤣
