Looks great! I'll have to update mine when I get home. I haven't had it on as there's been bad storms here the past 2 days and I always shut down.

Earlier today, we noted that ABC had updated its ABC Player application for the iPad to support video streaming over 3G networks and that the new version had been submitted to Apple for review.

Apple certainly didn't take long to look it over, however, as the updated version is now live in the App Store. In addition to 3G streaming, the new version brings a number of other improvements, notably including support for landscape orientation in all screens within the application. In order to support 3G streaming, ABC appears to have been required to add a lower-quality video stream for the system to default to when network performance demands it. In general, iPad users are experiencing lower quality video when streaming via 3G than via Wi-Fi, with different applications offering varying amounts of visible degradation on cellular networks. YouTube in particular has been cited as offering much poorer quality streams over 3G.

I just downloaded the update and tried it on my iPad and it looks great when on 3G. You can notice some pixelation when there's quick movement. But it really looks good. Hopefully other video apps will follow suit since obviously you can deliver much higher equality video across AT&T's network than we are currently getting from uTube and the like.

Is this high quality coming through in only high density urban areas, or areas with spotty signal also?

If you're in a car for eg (as a passenger not driver I hope :p), will your show switch to crap quality half way through?

Good thing MR has had multiple front page stories on this update.
After all, it is among the most important iPad apps ever made.

And the addition of ground breaking features like plays in landscape and responsive controls (Wow. Just wow.) is surely front page news.

This is sooooo awsome. Keep it up MR. Keep it up ABC.

Dude, iPad is going to have apps that iPod won't. Both are different devices. Deal with it.

That's not at all true. There is _no_ music app, likely no productivity app, and no utility apps you can only have on the iPad, for example. And as for this, it's just video, which the iPod/iPhone handles fine... what's the problem?

How are those iWork apps working out for you on iPod/iPhone?

There are most certainly examples in each of those categories that are iPad-only apps.

What I'm saying is there's no reason they _can't_ be on the iPhone. A couple more taps, maybe, but that's hardly a barrier.

In fact, I'd expect to see iWork for iPhone in the near future. Or, if not, somebody will bring a full-featured office suite to the iPhone.

Get over it, iPod handle video and all multimedia, but the iPad screen and processor are bigger and faster, so a lot of apps will be iPad only... Yeah you may find a limited version or an "iPod version of it" but I can tell already it won't be as good as it is on the iPad.

In my company for example they are working on apps just for iPad right now. So, go figure.

If you use your logic, this is good because if you could get an app for both devices why in the he'll you need an iPad then? For a big screen? Go plug your iPod to your tv as you do now.

Lol

Um, yes, that's what I'm trying to say. The iPad is pointless when you can do it all with an iPod touch. And there's no reason you can't do it all with an iPod touch.
