A&F clothing is designed to be a size too small cuz they don't want any "large" ppl wearing their product; they are extremely discriminatory.

While I agree with you that it is, in essence, discriminatory, I sense that there's a little bit of a negative connotation along with your words. It's just a simple case of a brand not fitting everybody, and not necessarily wanting to. They have their image to uphold, which is, say, different than the image that Eddie Bauer wants to have.

There should be some kind of male (or female) fashion thread on here where guys can post or link to stuff they like without feeling weird for posting that kind of stuff randomly, as I'm sure there are other people out there who want to do that to.

This is the way I see it.

At Abercrombie a large girl (maybe even normal :p) would probably have difficulty finding clothes that fit her.

The skinny girl that shops at Abercrombie probably wouldn't be able to find anything that fit her at Lane Bryant.

So whats the big deal?

I was in A&F once and I overheard this woman tell one of the staff "Why is everything so small here? You guys should carry size 20 stuff." This woman was pretty large. Maybe she should try going to the gym once and a while. I mean I don't mean to sound like an *******, but come on now. That's like criticizing people over having athletic, good looking bodies. So by that logic, people with fit, athletic bodies should go into some "Plus Sizes" shop and complain about not carrying any normal sized clothing.

There is no deal, it's the basic "I'm the victim" sentiment that pervades American society.

Thank you. Pretty much sums it up right there.

Ummm. Wow.

I don't know if you were trying to be sarcastic but that is one of the most ridiculous things I have read all day long. Your logic is completely flawed. A&F is not a shop like a "Plus Size" department. A plus size department is a special department for people needing larger clothes and not everyone who is plus size is fat. I find it absurd that you are using that as an example and have the audacity to even think that the customer should go to the gym because she needs a larger size. It is not like criticizing people for being physically fit and having “good looking” bodies. Your comment above is why most women in this country have a complex.
Sorry, rant over.

A&F clothes do not fit me because they are designed for skinny men with no muscle. I have a very muscular build because I work out 5 times a week, even their XL shirts do not fit me width wise but they are too long as if they are designed for a man who is bean pole. Will I complain? No, I will just go somewhere else instead of buying their overpriced junk. I’d much rather go to Neiman Marcus or Lacoste for my wardrobe.

you deffo have a point there mate. I personnally don't know A&f so well, since I've never lived anywhere that had a branch, but I've seen plenty of places much like it. Trouble is, they seem to construct garments with an ideal of people as largely two dimensional: women with a flat chest and not much waist or bottom, and guys (relatively) narrow through the shoulder, with flat, non-muscled thighs and buttocks, and a shallow chest. Kind of the mid-1990s Calvin Klein silhouette, ya know? 'Course, these things are a lot easier to design and manufacture cheaply, because you can skimp on the quality design to make them fit--for example, a wel-fitting ladie's jacket has *counting* about 10 separate panels, four of which are just for the back--which you would at first think is just a flat piece right? well, no :) But the stuff you see in places like Abercrombie or zara have half that. Less sewing, less designing, less material per square inch of human covered=more profit (= as eric said more house for A&F president, lol) So basically, it's a case of more people somewhat fitting into the clothes, rather than fewer people fitting great in them--d'ya see what I mean?

AF is designed for an age group. 17 to 22. its trendy, and thoes who wear it will soon realize after a while that there is more out there than the 'moose' and to the OP. if you are looking for a dress shirt, like formal. aF is not the place. They are your basic long sleeved shirt. If you show up to a nice function with a moose on your left chest you will look out of place. Their shirts are designed to be short because they dont promote tucking them in ( another reason its not a fancy shirt) and long arms so that they show coming out of the arm of a jacket. they recommend you roll the sleeves up when wearing them.

i worked there and this is what they told us.

ahhh to be in high school and wear one brand and have the same over priced shirt and jeans as 10 other people in the room.

I think its just the fit of the shirt.

As for the whole AF is overpriced debate, i pay more for it because it DOES fit well. For anyone who knows about clothing, buying a shirt from, lets say kohl's, won't suffice without some tailoring. Atleast in my experience that's been the case.

Just my two cents. :)

I buy it because it fits and I have to disagree and say that I think the quality is actually pretty good.

Compare it to Hollister, the cheaper AF owned brand where you see a rack of the same color shirt but the quality control is horrible because some shirts are slightly off in color. Not to mention they are paper thin. Compare with American eagle, which have horrendous build quality and materials.

I own a few shirts from Lacoste and I don't think their quality is worth $80. In fact I had one rip a seam after wearing it 3 times.

Moral of the story is buy it if you like it, buy it if it fits you. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If doesn't fit you, don't buy it. If you don't feel comfortable wearing it, don't buy it. If you don't like that other people wear it, too bad, move one.

Exactly! "plus size" departments are made for larger people, and A&F is made for slimmer, more athletic people. So a large person can walk into an A&F and complain nothing fits them, but an athletic person can't walk into a "plus size" department and complain that nothing fits them?

And shirts are too small there? Or maybe they're made smaller to emphasize your muscles (assuming you have any), or to make boobs look bigger? You're also a prime example of people I don't understand. How can you call A&F "overpriced" and "made for skinny people" when you shop at places like Lacoste? It's just as overpriced and does not carry larger sizes. I'm in no way saying A&F is better, I'm just trying to understand the hate towards it when it's exactly like every other high-end clothing store. I can walk into Old Navy and even their smallest shirt looks like a giant moo moo, so maybe I should suddenly hate Old Navy because they don't make shirts that fit me?

You can debate the quality issue all you want (although I do agree with ErikCLDR, their stuff is just better made).

Abercrombie does NOT advertise that they cater to only smaller "bean pole" frames in any shape or form. Now if they advertised that they cater to petite women and men with small frames that would make more sense. Plus Size shops advertise their specialty in their name alone. If you go to Bob's Big and Tall are you going to be looking for clothes if you are 5’4” man who weighs 135 pounds? No. Again, your debate is flawed, makes no sense and not to mention it sounds awful shallow.

Their clothing does not fit around my chest or allow full range of motion since they try to emphasize the non existent muscles of the skinny men they want their clothes on. The only shirt that fits me is their XL which is entirely too long (I am 6’0”) but still barely large enough for my shoulders or chest. I do not have an outrageous body builder chest but I am muscular. If I can go to Europe and still find clothes that fit me well we have a problem.

As for the pricing debate, that might be more of a personal opinion but it could apply to other people as well. I am not going to pay $90 for a pair of jeans that are so destroyed that they look ridiculous or won’t hold up over a couple years since they will fall apart even more. I know that the destroyed look is good, but they take it too far. I would much rather buy a pair of jeans elsewhere which would not make me look like I am still in college or high school. Since I do not know whether you are male or female I will say that the smallest mens shirt or t-shirt at Old Navy looks like it is for a child and their women’s small is for petite girls.

I think it's pretty obvious that A&F specializes in a younger crowd who are not that big. It's kind of blatant.

If they don't fit you, that's fine. There's no need to bash them. As far as I'm concerned, I've seen 6 footers wearing A&F just fine who aren't emaciated. Maybe, since you're so muscular, you view people who are moderately muscular as being really skinny. I'm 5 foot 9 and play basketball 2 hours per day and lift weights 3 days per week. I'm in great shape, not overly skinny, not overweight, but still with muscle. Their clothes fit me well, but I still only have one polo shirt and one pair of jeans from them. Sorry I don't subscribe to your definition of AF's customers.

Coming from the guy who buys Lacoste shirts...That's $70 of looking like a high school or college student for every shirt.

Dude, you're a walk contradiction. You call A&F small and overpriced, yet you shop a Lacoste, which is also small (they're French) and "overpriced".

And just for the record, ripped jeans are retarded. Concerning the quality debate, I was never talking about ripped jeans.

I used to be a sales person at A&F and I can tell you one thing. Shirts are called muscle fit for a reason. I always found the shirts to really squeeze you in all the right places, but its all personal preference on how you like to wear your clothes.

This is an example (Theory, not A&F) that's about right for current designs.

Theory shirt at Bluefly

My grandfather's company used to make their shirts. Price tags equivalent to around $200 USD were hanging off shirts that I got for free.(except it was in Japanese Yen because those shirts were heading to Japan) Ended up ruining a white shirt (I even started a thread on how to wash white shirts here after I did a bad job :p ), while I've worn the other one 5 times in 3 years because it's dry-clean only. It's also my nicest shirt. The white one was just an average, over-priced shirt.

Well said.

I find it funny that people pick Abercrombie & Fitch to poke fun at. They call it expensive and "everything looks the same", when in fact you could say that about pretty much 90% of clothing stores, yet people don't judge them. I don't get it. I like their clothes (clearance is where it's at, never buy full price).

You're right. I'll admit that I really hate A&F, American Eagle, etc. I think their clothes look average, look like horrible quality, feel like they're horrible quality, and cost too much for what it is. However, most chain stores are like that and I don't give the other brands nearly as much grief.

Dude, you're a walk contradiction.

And most of the things you have said in your post, including the post that NightFlight pointed out originally, completely lacks sense. They were quite funny to read until I realized you weren't being sarcastic. Lets examine this particular winner....

I would love to hear your award winning take on it. How is that flawed again? Because larger people can't fit into A&F somehow makes them a bad company? Not wanting to spend the money on clothes that cost that much is totally understandable. What isn't is blind hate like yours. You're denying that a majority of clothing departments only carry "normal" sizes?

Holy smokes! You guys take your clothes seriously don't you?

Hate? Clothes?

Hate? Clothes?

Haha. :p Calling it hate was a bit much; more like huge bias.

I'm just trying to understand (read: not defend) the bias against them, when so many other clothing companies do the exact same thing.

\ What isn't is blind hate like yours.

Haha, I don't consider it "blind hate" when I gave 4 reasons I think the store charges too much for what they're selling.

And you may not hear as many AE comments due to the fact that this isn't an AE thread more than any other reason. I really can't think of many stores that sell shirts at such a low quality:cost ratio. I hate to diss A&F only, but when it comes to big stores, A&F and AE are the ones that stand out.

there is nothing wrong with liking AF. Yes they advertise towards the smaller figure. But what Popular teen clothing store doesnt. My problem is the little ones that wear AF and only AF. I dont understand why everyone wants to look the same.

I've bought the "Ezra Fitch" dress shirts on clearance, because I don't feel that they're worth the $80. $35-$40 maybe but...

anyways, I haven't shopped there in a while, mostly due to my lack of disposable income (rent, groceries, and most importantly- a baby). If people get their kicks from buying $100 jeans and $80 shirts, more power to you. I've actually been wearing Aeropostale and American Eagle lately, because it's a bit more comfortable for my growing beer belly :) (which AF isn't!)
