It’s supposedly the premium material (for a premium price), and it looks fantastic... for about 10 minutes. It gets covered in the oils from your skin, which completely invalidates the gorgeous polish it ships with. Even worse, it collects micro scratches very easily, even from just the action of taking it in and out of a pocket. It’s kind of baffling that they keep using stainless steel since the original iPod.

What I’m wondering is what the hell is my silverware made out of? I have some utensils going back 2 decades without a scratch on them, and they get absolutely thrashed by very abrasive scrubbers. Why isn’t anyone making phones out of that?

I was thinking the same after 10 minutes playing with my new phone but then again I remembered I will put a cover on it anyway... so indeed, why bother with the beautiful polish when everybody (most people) closes it up anyway?

Depends. Cheap silverware is 18/0 stainless, and will rust after a few trips through the dishwasher. Premium (expensive) flatware is 18/10, and will last absolutely forever if it's well made.

having seen the pro and 12 in-store last week, the regular 12 looks better and definitely feels better (lighter). Just my opinion.

I am guessing you got the Silver version?

This has been my experience too. It sucks, but it's not like it can stay pristine forever unless you don't use it or are so careful that it hampers your enjoyment of the phone.

I ended up getting the clear MagSafe case and it provides the best of both worlds: Protects the back from micro-scratches while still showing the phone's finish.

I wear my stainless Rolex watches without worrying about scratches. It gives my watches character and memories. Especially my BLNR “batman”.
