I bought one for my ageing parents , they've got macs but can't use them ( can't get the hang of that mouse thing ! lol ) , their iPads are hard enough to work , so for watching nextflix etc this things perfect

It will probably be crap , but since I'm not expecting very much I doubt I'll be disappointed. :)

Trying a hard wire solution. Have an Airport express that extends the network right near the AppleTV, so I am running an ethernet cable from the Express to the AppleTV in the hopes it solves the connection issues. Will report back in the results in the next week.

It's a little bit better now with recent release. The stuttering has lessened and random crashing of apps and screen has lessened. The Surroynd issue is still messed up. Unsure if Apple will ever fix that problem.

For surround sound read the Apple support site for Apple TV Specifications.

Audio Formats

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1

If you rip with the correct audio settings you will hear proper surround!

I bought 8 and have no regrets. I replaced all of my FIOS Cable Boxes saving about $60 per month. Using the Channels App with HDHomeRun Prime fir live TV. I also use NETFLIX, Hulu with no commercials. Love having 1 box and remote for each TV. Loving my setup. I would check with Apple about your unique problems. But since you hate the UI not sure why you keep it.

Gawd. If we could get cable to the house and if they can figure out their DVR... Man that's slick. We're stuck with DirecTV and cable stops about a mile from here. Fortunately Uverse has a VRAD on the corner of our property or we'd be toast on Internet.

My only annoyance is the lack of Vudu player and Amazon prime playe would be nice. That and the switch it's plugged into has an eco feature that puts it to sleep so it asks me to log in. I just hit menu and give it a second and it wakes up the switch. Just which Apple would add 7.1 audio to the files.

Well I received mine today and have to say I'm rather impressed by it tbh.

Had the v2 & 3's and this thing wipes the floor with them , some minor wifi problems but that's probably my old bt router

Nice UI , some useful apps and easy to use.

Wondering if anyone else has serious buyers remorse about the 4th Generation AppleTV. I have had an AppleTV since the beginning (64GB Gen 1, followed by a Gen 3, now a Gen 4). The new one drops connection all the time, Siri NEVER understands what I am saying and even worse, half the time seems disconnected and doesn't process that I am even saying anything. The remote connection drops all the time and I have to restart it at least twice a week. That is on top of all the UI issues, like the white screen backgrounds (hideous) horrible remote interface and stupid app store implementation (why can I only see and get apps when on the AppleTV, not from my phone or desktop)

Have had the box since the 3rd week it came out and am constantly thinking about ripping it out by the wires and replacing it with a 3rd generation box, which worked beautifully for me for 3 years. I don't do that because I feel like I spent $200 on this stupid box and can't return it, so why waste another $70 on another older device to replace it. If Roku or Fire had a decent way to stream my own content via iTunes (I don't like Plex) I would gladly get one of their devices and walk away from this nightmare Apple convinced me to buy.

Anyone else feel similar?

That doesn't sound right to me. I replaced 3 ATV3s with new ATV4s. In fact they perform much better, because they support the AC wireless standard. I have an accent and Siri understands me most of the time. Not always, but that's to be expected.

Greetings
May I make a suggestion IF you have not done so. Switch to a 2.4GHz channel to see if the issue
could be poor penetration of the 5 GHz signal through the walls.
And / or switch channels within the 5GHz or the 2.4GHz signals.
Just an idea. Thank you and good luck.

If you have the Airport Express within 2 feet of the Apple TV, that might explain your disconnects. It doesn't seem to be very common knowledge, but a lot of WiFi router equipment tends to have a "dead zone" that extends out around the device by about 18 inches or so.

Not saying that it's the definitive cause of your disconnects, but it could be, or could at least be a contributing factor.

BTW... Eight? Please tell me you run an apartment complex, or a boarding school, or a home for wayward girls, or some such... I mean, you know, it's okay to have windows, or pictures, or bookcases on some walls, not every wall needs a TV (apparently all playing different shows at the same time).
I'm mostly kidding, so I won't do the whole paragraphs-long rant about how when I was a kid we used to just have the one TV in the living room and there were no remotes, except for the box that made the antenna on the roof rotate to point in the correct direction for various transmitters, and when you turned the TV off the screen would compress down to a dot in the middle that would slowly fade out as the electron gun discharged... Said paragraph to end with "and we liked it that way" and "get off my lawn!"

I found myself liking the ATV4 enough that I cancelled my cable TV subscription, paid for a Hulu subscription, and bought an indoor HDTV antenna just for the heck of it (don't watch much broadcast TV but figured it'd make a useful backup). Now I get to stay in a nicer interface, load the apps I want, see most of what I wanted, and save a pile of cash.

Ended up moving my RaspberryPi-based clock under the TV where the cable box used to be, because it turns out I was glancing at the cable box for the time more than I realized.

The problems you're having are not your AppleTV. I have the 4th gen and have none of the problems you are reporting.

I love ours (we have 2), BUT the remote is really crappy...its almost impossible to touch it without something happening. It's way too sensitive and is frankly just annoying.

There are two things I dislike about the remote. 1) It's terrible for scrolling long lists, and 2) the track pad should be white, or vice versa with the body. I pick it up and start using it upside down alot, especialy in the dark while watching a movie.

I think the touch panel could be a bit wider , when moving icons around I keep coming to the end of the button

I love mine. It's like Apple fulfilled my entire wishlist for the Apple TV (Apps, iTunes Extras, Fast Switching, Siri, Dictation, etc.).

TV OS is new and there are some bugs (I frequently have issues with the iTunes apps, Hulu app is buggy, CNN app is buggy, etc.), but compared to what we had before this one is amazing.

I just noticed you have an AirPort Extreme. Is it AC? I've had hell with mine dropping my cable connection spontaneously. I'm hoping Apple updates the firmware for it soon.

Do you also happen to have an Arris/Motorola Surfboard modem? If so, I have a Time Capsule and had a Surfboard that would also cause dropped cable connections. When looking at the Airport Utility, my TC would have a green status symbol, but the internet would have an orange symbol. Apparently, Apple's routers can have compatibility issues with the Surfboard modems. My only recourse was to replace my Surfboard with a Netgear modem. Haven't dropped the cable connection since. Odd thing is, the TC and Surfboard didn't have any issues for the first couple years I had them. Apple or Motorola must have updated their firmware and caused the issue.

Weird that you say that. Mine and a buddy's started doing the same thing about a month ago. I was assuming it was something with Cox since I had the same set-up for the last 5 years. It's really odd that there were no problems and then they started. Only good thing is that it finally got me to upgrade my Airport Extreme to an AC model when trying fixes. I hadn't replaced the modem yet because of it starting to happen with my buddy too. Never thought that it would be a Surfboard - Apple issue. I might be ordering a netgear modem now.

Sold Mine Picked up a Roku 4, the box run warmas other than that I've had no issues and Mainly now I can use Amazon Instant Video, Vudu, Stream from Starz and Encore, listen to Spotify and Amazon Primne Music, and have access to alot more of why I would want a streaming box, IMHO the Apple TV only makes sense if you buy only from the Itunes Echosystem.

I had some serious issues w/my surfboard modem and cox. I had to keep rebooting my modem to get my connection to work even w/the latest firmware. Ultimately, my internet became unusable. Many level 2 support discussions and tech visits to my home. Apparently Cox is semi-aware of the issue and it has to do with Apple's IPv4 implementation (which one tech mentioned but didn't elaborate on). I ran into some thread on this somewhere and disabled IPv4. Now I never have to reboot and am at full speed.

Also, you should check if you really need to extend your network. I, too, thought it was a good idea until I checked the speed with or without the extension. Even with a weaker signal my speed at more remote locations was better with a single extreme.

From the Cox site (residential support):

http://www.cox.com/residential/supp...rticleId=0bced860-9666-11df-6baf-000000000000

Are there any known incompatibilities with IPv6?
The majority of retail home routers, especially those produced within the last few years, are fully IPv6-compatible. Cox has determined that Apple AirPort Extreme routers, including Time Capsule models, can experience Internet connectivity problems when running IPv6 on firmware versions 7.7.3 and earlier. Customers can resolve the issue by disabling IPv6 from the AirPort Utility on the iOS or OS X device. For more information and steps to resolve, contact Apple Support.

Aha! I, too, have had issues with intermittent internet dropping, when I then have to reboot the AEBS (latest model). The modem is a Motorola Surfboard. Everything worked just great for about three years and then the internet drop-outs began. The problem became very severe with my earlier AEBS so I bought the one I"m using now and the problem still occurs but not quite as frequently. Let's hope that pretty soon Apple issues a firmware update! Apparently Cox is indeed in the process of moving from IPv4 to IPv6, with this presumably being "transparent" to the customer. The consumer does need a DOCIS 3.0 modem.

Works perfectly here - bought on first day. Remote has never dropped connection on me....

Really?? Mine always has to reconnect after not watching for a while (~ an hour or more). So, virtually every time I sit down to start watching AppleTV, I first must press any button on the remote to get the "Remote Connected" message before I can start using it. Are you saying that your remote stays continuously connected?? I didn't think it was supposed to work that way. Wouldn't that constant bluetooth connection drain the battery quickly?

My TV, bluray player and Apple TV are connected to the same power strip. So after watching, we simply shut everything down with the switch. I guess if you wake it up from sleep, it will do what you experience.

I agree. Unless your locked into itunes, Roku has a lot more to offer, and with almost every disc purchase I've built up a 1400+ UV movie library that I can't access on the Apple TV but can access it several ways on any Roku, the best one is Vudu. Plus I have a 4K tv.....Roku 4 makes much more sense for me.

Sometimes I wish I hadn't jumped in so early when iTunes had the best variety of content, but the deal breaker for me is offline availability. All of my iTunes movies/shows are downloaded to my computer and streamable to the atv at full quality regardless if my internet is acting up or completely disconnected. That is a feature you don't appreciate until there is an outage or you just moved.

I have the network disconnect issue from time to time .. not sure why. I am running an Airport Extreme ac and a 27" iMac i7 (2011) and the latest iTunes and OS X software.

My biggest complaint is the new remote - hard to scroll through 1400+ movies to find "Zero Dark Thirty". Usually about halfway through the scroll it jumps into the "Genre" column and when I switch back to "All Movies" it starts back at A. What a pain!
