I would like to be able to do this on my iPad, I need to lookup passwords. Is there a way I can open and edit an encrypted Excel spreadsheet from a USB key or external hard drive?

First, I don’t think iPad supports sth called OTG. So reading USB stick may not be possible.
Then, excel on iPad may not support open encrypted excel file. I am not sure.
Therefore, I think it is not possible to do so on iPad.

If by encrypted, you mean password protected, the answer is yes. I do it all the time. As far as reading from USB drives goes, you'd have to get one that is iPad compatible ( one that has USB on one end and lighting on the other of that will connect over wifi)

Yes I mean password protected, do you read it from a USB key?
