how can I access my windows pc (not just the files, I want to be able to move around .. something like vmware but it's on another machine - I guess you could say it's something like remote desktop) from my mac?

I use TeamViewer, which works with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Ubuntu, iPhone, iPad, etc. It's very secure and quite simple to set up and use.... and it's free.
+1. I use it and have it installed on my MacBook, windows computer and my phone. Great program and if your connections are fast enough you can do a lot of work with it.
And it's free 🙂
