Hi!

Sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum, I really didn't know where it fitted in.

Anyhow, my friend has a MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 with a 2,5" HDD which is excruciatingly slow. She has lots of photos and files which she would like to backup, but the computer hangs when trying to copy to many files at once. My idea was therefore to remove the HDD and connect it to another Mac via a hard drive enclosure, and backup the files in that way. However, I've never done this with a HDD with OS X before so my question is; Will I be able to access all of the files on the HDD as I would through Finder on the computer itself?

Thank you very much for your time!

Yes, placing there drive into an external usb case should allow you to copy the files to another drive via finder if the drive is not encrypted.

The fact that the computer hangs may indicate the drive is failing.

You can do this. All you need is a small phillips screwdriver and a USB enclosure (preferably USB 3.0) such as this one:

You could also connect the Mac via Thunderbolt cable to another Mac

And then you can use target disk mode:

That, or the SATA cable is bad.
