Accidental itunes multiple purchases?

Just a simple quickie.........

Is there an option to prevent myself (or someone else!!!!) from accidentally purchasing the same songs in iTunes?? ie....songs that I already have as my son keeps buying tracks that we already own!

As far as i know, if you download a song a second time from the same account, it'll let you download it but it won't charge you. Of course, the computer has to be authorized and it has to be on the same iTunes account.
