Package cydia is not available, but is reffered to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted or is only available from aonther source. However the following packages replace it saurik bigboss modyifone....

Thats what it says when i try to install cydia with the above command.

I've decided to go the route of "restore and re-jailbreak", but could use a bit of advice.

I have downloaded the 4.01 ipsw and tried to restore in itunes. I get the message "firmware file is not compatible".

I do have SHSH on file w/ Cydia, and have gone to saurik's site (http://www.saurik.com/id/12) and read "bypassing the overlord" to redirect the request to cydia server.

BUT, I have no idea what the instructions here are referring to:
So, open the file /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Can anyone fill me in on this step of the process? I should be good to go after that, just need to redirect to cydia for signature and avoid going to itunes and being forced to update to 4.02!!

Thanks!

BTW, this whole "accidentally deleted Cydia" (in my son's case, anyway) was the result of removing apps from Cydia (Terminal, I believe) and having it crash. After reboot, Cydia was no longer there....that's all. It had nothing to do w/ and "accidental upgrade".

It's called modifying the hosts file. It's a hidden file on a Mac.
There are numerous tutorials on the Internet already about how to do this.
Why not just Google "How to modify the hosts file on a MAC" ?

Oh, just like some 'accidentally' upgrade to the beta of 4.1 yesterday. Trust me I know..

Finally i manage to restore my ios 4.0.1
and I am very happy for it. thanks to all you guys. :)

opened terminal, entered "/etc/hosts"

and I get "permission denied".

Seems like it should be simple, but keep hitting roadblocks...any help appreciated.

Open terminal. Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" without the quotes.

Enter your computer password when asked.

Use arrow keys to navigate. Go to the bottom of the file, start a new line and add "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" without the quotes. Make sure that's the only thing on the line.

Finally, press control+X, then press Y, then press enter.

That should be it! Let me know if you have any problems!

Installing Cydia over SSH:

Download these two files:
Cydia and essential
Now you will have 2 .deb files. You will need to get them onto your phone using your client of choice (WinSCP, FileZilla, etc).
In an SSH session, change to the folder you put the debs in. Type exactly the following:
• dpkg -i essential_0-1_iphoneos-arm.deb cydia_1.0.3222-73_iphoneos-arm.deb; respring

If you attempt to install either on it’s own you will get errors and it will not work. Once it has finished, your phone should respring, and if all is well, you should again have Cydia on your springboard.

Ha, are you even on a previously jailbroken iPhone? Are you actually logging in as the "root" user via ssh? It's not rocket science, but then again you did manage to somehow uninstall Cydia.

This will install Cydia if it's not already:
apt-get install cydia

Type this,
dpkg --get-selections | grep saurik

it will display something like:
com.saurik.iphone.cve-2010-1797 install

The one with the cve in it is the package to uninstall for the PDF fix:

Uninstall it with dpkg
dpkg -r com.saurik.iphone.cve-2010-1797

Johnny come lately here :)
I realize this is an old thread - still hoping someone can help.
I, like another OP who posted here, used cydia to manage my installed apps,
and deleted something I thought I had no use for. Yes, I was warned that
if I delete it some things might not work. But that was too cryptic a message,
which should have been: this will also delete cydia!!

At anywho, I tried
apt-get install cydia

and it turns out I do not have apt-get.

I then downloaded cydia_1.1.1_iphoneos-arm.deb
from http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/
and ran
dpkg -i cydia_1.1.1_iphoneos-arm.deb

installed without errors.

I rebooted - and I still do n ot have cydia
icon on the screen.
