So I just migrated to iCloud and in the process I seemed to have messed things up. My Apple ID has always been an @gamil.com address although I have had a mobile me account for years. Whilst migrating my Mac and iPhone suddenly had my Apple ID as an @me.com address.

Now the conversion is complete and I have managed to correct everything so all the iCloud syncing is using the correct Apple ID (@gamil.com) but I can no longer sync with mail and notes using the @me.com address as I cannot tie my @gmail ID to the original @me.com address.

Seriously annoying, do I need to call Apple?

No. You just need to go under Settings>Mail and create another iCloud account with your MM credentials. This second iCloud account will be MM and just turn on Mail and Notes under this account, and turn everything else off if you do not use @me contacts, cal, and reminders.
