I would say it all depends on how well this iPod touch sells. I can see Apple launching the iPod touch 7th generation in the Summer of 2017 if this one sells well, but I don't see them releasing it at any time next year.

Given the sheer amount of chatter that's gone through for the IpT6 while the latest and greatest was IpT5, I'd say we shouldn't count out the insanity from that ;)

Yep, I'm pretty excited over it myself! Apple has dropped me in just about every other way, but glad to see them still offering an up-to-date media player.

I think moving the iPod touch to A8 had more to do with moving the entire iOS lineup to 64 bit going forward. Now, just the 5C remains as a 32 bit device. Apple probably was also running low on A5 chip production, and with the iPad mini 1 gone, it wasn't worth keeping the A5 line open for just one device. 5C is probably just using up excess A6 chips still around, but even that line is probably winding down too...

I don't think there is any guarantee of a 7th gen device. Apple updated the 6th gen enough that they can keep it for several years, so I would say 3 years or so until all the other A8 devices are being discontinued and then depending on sales it will either be discontinued or updated to a 7th gen.

The only way we are going to see a 7th gen anytime soon is in the unlikely event that interest in the 6th gen goes back up to what the iPods had in '06 or '07 before the iPhone really came around.

probably won't be updated for a while. They gave it the A8 so now they can forget about it for another 4 years then update it again.
Absolutely. A few of us thought this generation would get an A7 chip. The reason they gave it an A8 is so they could "forget about it" for a few more years.

Don't expect anything to change before late 2017, probably summer 2018.

***Shaking my head***

Think I'll start a thread for the 8th gen iPod Touch next. Looking forward to it!
You should start one so we can speculate if it will have the A25 chip, 128gb ram and 3tb storage with a Hubble like telescopic camera.

So, everybody seems to be excited about today's announcement, but what about the future? When can we expect the 7th generation with bigger screen, 2GB RAM and Touch ID ? 2018 or sooner ?

How about a million never years?

not before 2018 maybe never, so you might as well get this 6th gen and just sit tight.

I also think Apple is treating the iPod more like a game console. Think more reminiscent of portable gaming handhelds. They get drastic upgrades every so number of years.
